Luisa Medeiros Massarani, Thaiane Moreira De Oliveira et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2025

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific authorities were routinely consulted by mainstream media outlets through interviews, statements and/or supporting images. In this framework, our goal in this study was to analyze the media representation of scientists in Brazil during the first year of this global public health crisis. To this end, we applied a research protocol and, using statistical techniques, quantitatively analyzed newscasts o…

Brazil ranks second worldwide in COVID-19 deaths. In this country, television is the most popular means of mass communication, and 95.5% of Brazilian homes have a TV set. During the coronavirus pandemic, Brazilians considered TV news the most reliable source of information about COVID-19. In this context, we examined the coverage of vaccines, between 2020 and 2021, on the main Brazilian TV newscast – Jornal Nacional. We identified 1,173 reports o…

  • Is Jair Bolsonaro a classic populist

João Feres Junior, Fernanda Cavassana De Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Is Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro a classic populist? This article tries to answer this question by testing whether the political discourse of Bolsonaro fits the tenets of two major theories of populism: Mudde and Kaltwasser’s and Laclau’s. We analyse the entire text of his presidential campaign platform to find that Bolsonaro’s discourse has almost no room for a ‘concept of the people’ or of nation, a fact that problematizes the bulk of the l…

  • The Copy Desk and the Dilemmas of the Institutionalization of “Modern Journalism” in Brazil

Afonso De Albuquerque, Jacques Gagliardi et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism Studies•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The institutional research of the news media has mainly focused on the American news media and political institutions. By discussing the reform of the Diário Carioca newspaper, in the 1950s—usually referred to as the birth of modern journalism in Brazil—this article aims to examine the institutionalization of the news media in a different social context. The reform of Diário Carioca in the 1950s provides an early example of the influence of the A…

Open Access•Jacques Gagliardi, Juliana Gagliardi De Araújo et al.•ARTICLE•Revista FAMECOS•2010
