Words Apart: A Study of Attitudes Toward Varieties of South African English Accents in a United States Employment Scenario
This study investigates Americans' attitudes toward the four major accents of South African English (SAfE) and several of their subvarieties in a hypothetical U.S. employment scenario. Participants perceived that SAfE accents possess positive language personality traits in comparison with standard American English; however, respondents identify SAfE speakers as foreign and perceive specific SAfE-accented varieties to be superior and more dynamic …
Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands (Part 5): Rathlin, A Twentieth-Century Survival
Of all the 'Irish Sea' islands, Rathlin retained a significant tradition of community-based seabird fowling into recent times. Formal harvesting of the birds probably ended shortly after the introduction of later nineteenth-century bird protection legislation, but cliff-climbing for eggs continued into the mid-twentieth century. It was brought to a formal end by further legislation in 1954, but in practice by a cliff death in 1945 and much reduce…

Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands (Part 4): Environmental and Cultural Influences
Seabird populations have been affected by fisheries, climate, predators, and other pressures these past two hundred years. These had little proven impact on such traditional fowling activities as were still practised around the Irish Sea, but they coincided with fast-developing industrialization and profit-maximization. Vast numbers of seabirds and their eggs were sought for food, feathers, and oil; and a growing conservation lobby sought their l…
Geographic market access and the effects of trade on length of production run, product diversity and plant scale of Canadian manufacturing plants, 1974-1999
While much attention has been paid to the effects of trade liberalization at the national scale, relatively little attention has been give to whether these effects vary across regions. This article examines how Canada's increased integration into North American markets has differentially affected the manufacturing sector of different Canadian regions. Using heterogeneous models of firms to inform the analysis, it asks how plant specialization, pl…
Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands (Part 3): The Calf of Man
The Calf once hosted substantial colonies of puffins, and more particularly shearwaters. Evidence for the one-time exploitation of 'true puffins' is as scarce and fragmentary as for gulls, guillemots, and razorbills (see Part 2, Folk Life, 48.2 (2010)), but commercial exploitation of 'Manx puffins' is better recorded. No detailed early accounts of 'puffin'-harvesting appear to survive (tools, techniques, terminology, and social organization, or p…
Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands (Part 2): Mainland of Man
The full paper 'Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands' now appears in four parts. Except for the 'Manx puffin' (Part 3, forthcoming, Folk Life, 49.1), little survives to illuminate seabird exploitation in the Isle of Man, and possible reasons for this and for the paucity of evidence elsewhere around the Irish Sea are discussed in Part 4 (forthcoming, Folk Life, 49.2). For the mainland of Man, fragmentary evidence confirms on…
Harvesting Seabirds and their Eggs on the Irish Sea Islands (Part 1): The Welsh Islands, Lundy and Scilly
Seabirds today are primarily of ornithological and ecological interest. They have long been important, however, in the diet, economy and culture of coastal subsistence communities in peripheral parts of the British Isles. Following earlier studies relating to Scotland and the Faroes, the first part of this paper discusses the fragmentary evidence for exploiting seabirds and their eggs mainly on the Welsh islands and Lundy. With particular referen…
Agglomeration and the Geography of Localization Economies in Canada
Baldwin J. R., Beckstead D., Brown W. M. and Rigby D. L. Agglomeration and the geography of localization economies in Canada, Regional Studies. This paper maps the spatial variation in productivity levels across Canadian cities and models the underlying determinants of that variation. There are two main goals. The first is to confirm the existence, the nature and the size of agglomeration economies; and the second to identify the geographical ext…

The changing geography of the Canadian manufacturing sector in metropolitan and rural regions, 1976–1997
This paper documents the changing geography of the Canadian manufacturing sector over a 22‐year period (1976–1997). It does so by looking at the shifts in employment and differences in production worker wages across different levels of the rural/urban hierarchy—central cities, adjacent suburbs, medium and small cities and rural areas. The analysis demonstrates that the most dramatic shifts in manufacturing employment were from the central cities …

A seguir, examinamos as normas culturais do machismo e do marianismo. Finalmente, discutimos os avanços que as mu…
A Comparison of Job Creation and Job Destruction in Canada and the United States
In recent years a growing number of countries have constructed data series on job creation and job destruction using establishment-level data sets. This paper provides a description and detailed comparison of these new data series for the United States and Canada. Pint, the Canadian and United States industry-level job creation and destruction rates are remarkably similar. Industries with high (low) job creation in the U.S. exhibit high (low) job…

The evolution of transportation policy in Canada
The nineteenth century produced the deeply rooted belief that transportation was one of the few major instruments of policy for affecting national and regional growth. Basically transportation was monopolistic and centred upon railway dominance. Because of these conditions, large government interventions in the normal economic processes of transport were assumed to be necessary and normal. Rapidly changing economic and technical processes after t…

Criminal Juries
The jury represents the very cornerstone of the Anglo-American legal system, and a massive literature has built up over the course of this century as testimony to this fact. Three important sets of empirical questions can be isolated: whether the jury is a competent fact finder, able to assess evidence, understand legal instructions, and reach appropriate results; whether juries are representative of the communities from which they come and, wher…
