  • Prophet of Discontent

Open Access•Andrew J Douglas, Jared Loggins et al.•BOOK•Prophet of Discontent•2021

Many of todayâ s insurgent Black movements call for an end to racial capitalism. They most often take aim at policing and mass incarceration, the racial partitioning of workplaces and residential communities, and the expropriation and underdevelopment of Black populations at home and abroad. Scholars and activists increasingly regard these practices as essential technologies of capital accumulationâ evidence that capitalist societies past and pre…

  • W. E. B. Du Bois and the Critique of the Competitive Society

    Open Access•Andrew J Douglas•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2015

This essay explores W. E. B. Du Bois’s evolving sense of disillusionment with the liberal paradigm in an effort to stimulate critical thinking about an American political culture consumed by both the fear and purported legitimacy of private competition. Du Bois always encouraged sustained critical appraisal of an American society torn between winners and losers, the favored and the damned. As his thinking developed into the 1930s, he focused more…

  • Democratic darkness and Adorno’s redemptive criticism

    Open Access•Andrew J Douglas•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2010•Cited by: 1

Adorno’s critical theory aims to open space for the expression of alternative futures, but its insistence on dialectical reflection encourages at the same time our sustained attentiveness to the psychic and material constraints that may prevent the very possibilities we imagine. In this article, I argue that dialectical reflection signals a location at which transcendental claims enter our thinking and that, for Adorno, such reflection provides a…

  • Democratizing Dialectics with C.L.R. James

    Open Access•Andrew J Douglas•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2008

This essay explores the work of C.L.R. James in an effort to rethink the democratic import of dialectical thought. James is best known as a West Indian Marxist and the author of The Black Jacobins , but he is also a deeply democratic thinker and a creative reader of Hegel. Alongside the more orthodox Marxist strand of his thought, James develops a mode of dialectical reflection that is attentive to a sense of democratic uncertainty and that aims …
