  • European Muslims and the Qur’an: Practices of Translation, Interpretation, and Commodification

Gulnaz Sibgatullina, Gerard Wiegers•BOOK•European Muslims and the Qur'an•2023

This edited volume aims to advance a Muslim-centered perspective on the study of Islam in Europe. To do so, it brings together a range of case studies that illustrate how European Muslims engaged with their Sacred Scripture while being part of a Christian-dominated social and political space. The research presented in this volume seeks to analyse Muslims’ practices of translating, interpreting and using the Qur’an as a sacred object and, thus, pu…

Open Access•Gerard Wiegers, Mònica Colominas Aparicio•ARTICLE•Hamsa•2023

This contribution analyzes comparative studies on Jews and Muslims, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, being the relationship between these communities and their histories a topic that has aroused great interest in recent years. We focus on recent studies of their groups as minorities which take a clear comparative perspective, base their analysis on historical data and contribute to the formation of theory and methodology. The period covers …

  • The Iberian Qur’an: From the Middle Ages to Modern Times

    Mercedes García-Arenal, Gerard Wiegers•BOOK•Iberian Qur'an•2022

Due to the long presence of Muslims in Islamic territories (Al-Andalus and Granada) and of Muslims minorities in the Christians parts, the Iberian Peninsula provides a fertile soil for the study of the Qur’an and Qur’an translations made by both Muslims and Christians. From the mid-twelfth century to at least the end of the seventeenth, the efforts undertaken by Christian scholars and churchmen, by converts, by Muslims (both Mudejars and Moriscos…

  • Muslim doctors and decision making in palliative care: A discourse analysis

Open Access•George Muishout, Anne de la Croix et al.•ARTICLE•Mortality•2022

Muslim care providers working in a Western context have to deal with Western norms and regulations about palliative decision-making. It is known that some of them struggle with aspects of palliative care, but the way in which they argue and act when working in a Western context has not previously been studied. Therefore, this study examines the ways in which Muslim doctors frame their attitudes and practices regarding palliative decision-making. …

    Open Access•Gerard Wiegers•ARTICLE•Journal of Religious History•2022

This article challenges the observation that historians and the discipline of History have not been helpful in addressing some of the important challenges in the Study of Religion by concentrating on "the local" and on deconstruction rather than on construction and "the global." By undertaking a cross-cultural case study - Medieval and Early Modern prophecies in the Muslim world and Europe - and focusing on the role and significance of the Granad…

This essay analyses the comparisons made in the Apology against the articles of the Christian Religion by Muhamad Alguazir (c. 1610). Alguazir, a Morisco from Pastrana (Spain), was one of the Moriscos living at the court of sultan Mawlay Zaydan (1608–1627). Open Access•Mònica Colominas Aparicio, Gerard Wiegers•ARTICLE•Hamsa•2020

This paper argues that the hitherto unknown Portuguese “Profesias dadas por um Mouro de Granada” (Prophecies given by a Moor of Granada) (copied 18th c.) should be seen as an example of messianic-political prophetic imagination in early modern Portugal and Spain. Our discussion will focus on the political uses of Sebastianism in Portugal and on the various ways in which prophetic language became entangled with broader prophetic discourses in the …

For many Muslims, the textual sources of Islam provide the guiding principles on which they base their beliefs. These texts have also been studied by Western scholars of Islam for centuries. Most of their work has focussed on the historicity of the texts, often at the expense of the study of Muslims' highly diverse interpretation and application of these sources in everyday life. This volume provides new insights into the transmission of these so…
