Adapting to climate change: Experiences of elderly female household heads in Domboshava communal lands
The heavy reliance of elderly women on rain-fed agriculture in the context of a changing climate, combined with restrictive gendered power relations, places them in a precarious position. This ethnography, conducted in Gutsa village, Domboshava communal lands in Zimbabwe, asked: How do elderly female household heads make sense of, respond to, and organize their livelihoods in the wake of climate change? Findings show that adaptation capacity amon…
Care and caring among ageing migrant workers in two informal settlements in Harare
In this study of older migrants living in informal settlements in Harare, we seek to understand what care and caring means for older people ageing far from their place of origin in conditions of informality in a country with no formal care infrastructure. We find that care relations derive from histories of migration, community, kinship, aspiration, displacement and disenfranchisement, with the provision of security within insecure systems core t…
Emic ethnographic encounters: Researching elderly female household heads' experience with climate change in rural Zimbabwe
In this article, I discuss the experiences of conducting ethnographic research in my village of origin in Zimbabwe. The issues I discuss in this article are the methodological approach, the deconstruction of prior assumptions, challenges in meeting respondents, positionality and grappling with multiple identities in the field, the unintended therapeutic effect of life histories, learning the art of patience in fieldwork, reciprocity, friendship a…
Making Ends Meet: Experiences of Older Women Heading Households in Rural Domboshava, Zimbabwe
Most ethnographies still pay little attention to the subsistence experiences of older adult women heading household in Africa. Drawing from nineteen months of ethnographic research in Domboshava communal lands, this article addresses this gap in knowledge by discussing the position of older women heading households in rural Zimbabwe and the impact of historical and current challenges on their subsistence activities. In this article, I argue that …
Economic Decline, Health Worker Migration and its Impact on Female Workload in Zimbabwe
This paper explores the implications of Home Based Care on women’s workload in the context of high HIV and AIDS prevalence rates in Zimbabwe as the country has experienced serious health worker migration since 2000. Health worker migration in Zimbabwe as a result of the weak performance of the economy over the years has inadvertently increased women’s workload as more and more people adopt Home Based Care for their terminally ill family members s…
Sexuality among the elderly in Dzivaresekwa district of Harare: The challenge of information, education and communication campaigns in support of an HIV/Aids response
This ethnographic study in Dzivaresekwa district, Harare, Zimbabwe, examines the issue of sexuality among the elderly and their challenges in accessing information, education, and communication (IEC) campaigns in the face of HIV and AIDS. The research depended heavily on collecting life histories through key informant interviews. The theory of structuration (as proposed by Anthony Giddens) was adopted as a framework to analyse the findings. The f…
