Between Bandung and Havana: Emergent Solidarities and the Forgotten Poetry of Viva Cuba
In 1963, a group of prominent Indonesian writers contributed to a poetry pamphlet entitled Viva Cuba. This collection was published at a critical historical juncture: it was released after the 1955 Asia Africa Conference in Bandung, prior to the 1966 Tricontinental Conference in Havana, and before the Indonesian left was eliminated in a 1965 anticommunist coup d’état. By analyzing the now-forgotten poetry of Viva Cuba and other contextualizing te…
Archipelagic Currents in the Global Novel: 24 Hours with Gaspar by Sabda Armandio
Crime fiction, a frequently translated and highly translatable literary genre, has generated perspectives on the global and the local in ways that shape cartographies of world literature. The Indonesian novel 24 Hours with Gaspar by Sabda Armandio is a case study for how specific texts within the genre can serve as points of departure for theorizing cultural geography in an imaginative mode. En privé & en public: The Epistolary Preparation of the Dutch Stadtholders
In his educational treatise, the Instruction du prince chrétien (1642), André Rivet, the tutor of the future Willem II (1627-1650), presents his ideal of a virtuous prince well versed in the skills required to govern himself and his subjects. In the educational correspondences surrounding the future Dutch stadtholders we see some of these theoretical principles played out in epistolary practice. Reading the correspondence against the foil of Rive…
Withdrawal and Engagement in the Long Seventeenth Century: Four Case Studies
The Cistercian monastery La Trappe, Mme de Maintenon's school for girls at St Cyr, the schools at A. H. Francke's foundations at Halle and the community established within these foundations bring to the fore the dynamic between withdrawal and engagement and the medial expressions of this dynamic. But each case demonstrates a particular employment of architecture, texts, music and images in the service of withdrawal and engagement respectively. At…
