A Pious Knight’s Flaw, Quandary, and Burden
This article argues that a close look at the concepts of “golde and fee” in the Middle English tail-rhyme romance Sir Isumbras reveals that the choice that is demanded of the hero at the start of the poem amounts to a subtle psychological strategy by God. Possessions and pride in them, which the poem announces as the hero’s main fault, end up being much more integral to his psychological makeup than he realizes when he first undertakes to reform …

Josian and the Heroism of Patience in Bevis of Hampton
This article argues that the solo adventures of Josian, the main female character of the Middle English Bevis of Hampton in the Auchinleck Manuscript, develop in the way that they do because they are meant to be directly parallel to the adventures of her lover and husband, Bevis. In comparison to Bevis’s deeds, which are mainly physical, Josian’s are best described as acts of patience. Her adventures then can fit into a tradition of female herois…

This article explores the resilience of the mother’s powerful influence during early infancy as it is described in child-abandonment stories in the Old Icelandic sagas of Icelanders. When male characters in the sagas try to co-opt maternal space by exposing unwanted infants to the elements, opportunities to apply recent feminist approaches crop up with unusual force.
