  • Derridean Gaming and Buddhist Utpāda-Bhaṅga (Rising/Falling)

    Robert Magliola•ARTICLE•Comparative and Continental…•2020

During Jacques Derrida’s earlier phases, his stylistique acts out (in the sense of “performs”) the same project evident in his semantic. Derridean stylistic practice and thematics both undertake the project of deconstructing entitative thinking. Anglophonic philosophers often ignore (or cannot detect) his stylistic games, which are often Talmudic or unique to French. Derrida did not have a Buddhist agenda, but two of my past books, both well-rece…

Open Access•T Spagnoli, Marina Caputo et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2012

Method: We asked those children (males and females aged between 10 and 15 years) 'what we mean by Mediterranean diet?'. Then we proposed a scenario: 'you are the director of a film stage in which a family, mother and father with their sons are eating at home; they live in fifties at the seaside and the father is a fisherman; now you put them around the table of their kitchen and write what we have to put in to realize this scene; if possible, exp…

  • Buddhism and Postmodernity

Robert Magliola•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2009

As is well-known, some Buddhologists have opposed Buddhism to what is called the postmodern turn, and others have compared the two favorably. This debate has figured less prominently in the more specialized field of Buddhist ethics, though the latter has been for some time one of the most active topics on the Buddhist publishing scene. The preponderance of authors in such noteworthy collections as Contemporary Buddhist Ethics (2000) and Action Dh…

  • Dante and Derrida

Robert Magliola•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2007

Francis Ambrosio's remarkable study of Dante/Derrida follows Derrida in order to read Dante better and follows Dante in order to recognize Derrida as our contemporary Virgil (13). Dante and Derrida criss-cross each other, converging at the end in the Forgiveness, which is before but from the “Gift of Death.” Ambrosio's book contributes much brilliance to what is fast becoming the stylish turn among Catholic philosophers numbered among those whom …

  • On Chinese Body Thinking

Robert Magliola, Kuang-Ming Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy East and West•1999

This book uses Western philosophical tradition to make a case for a form of thinking properly associated with ancient China. The book's thesis is that Chinese thinking is concrete rather than formal and abstract, and this is gathered in a variety of ways under the symbol thinking. The root of the metaphor is that the human body has a kind of intelligence in its most basic functions. When hungry the body gets food and eats, when tired it sleeps, w…

  • Derrida on the Mend

    Kenneth K Inada, Robert Magliola•ARTICLE•Buddhist-Christian Studies•1985

The pun built into its title, Derrida the Mend, suggests the thesis of this book. Derrida is indeed astride the whereby logocentrists (theorists who believe in organic unity) think to repair the rents in organicism. Derrida is indeed devouring the mend, but his quandary is that he must use logic (a logocentric operation) to do so. For Derrida to be on the mend in the other sense activating the pun, a means must be found to heal the quandary while…
