This article discusses online harassment against women journalists exploring self-reported incidents, effects, and trust in safety mechanisms. We identify three overarching themes: increasing visibility in a …

Open Access•Maria João Silveirinha, Paula Lobo et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 16

A large body of research has documented gender bias in the news coverage of women. Despite small gains in recent years, namely on television, and the growing percentage of females in the workforce, substantial underrepresentation of women in the news has remained. To explore journalists’ social and professional world as a milieu of the lived professional and culturally grounded understandings of gender, we conducted participant observation of a t…

    Open Access•Maria João Silveirinha, Susana Sampaio‐dia et al.•ARTICLE•Media & Jornalismo•2022•References: 12

Rita Basílio De Simões, Maria João Silveirinha•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 14

In September 2015, following the ratification of Istanbul Convention by Portugal, addressing someone with unwanted verbal “sexual proposals” became a criminal offence. This however, barely meets the requirements of the treaty and is far from what was first discussed about sexual harassment both in the Portuguese Parliament and more broadly in the media. • Bolhas de verdade: Cinco alfinetes para (re)construir a democracia

    Open Access•Maria João Silveirinha•ARTICLE•Estudos em Comunicação•2018

In our article we seek to reflect on the implications of the word "post-truth" as a way of characterizing our societies suffering from a media, cultural, social and political malaise. We believe that the important research that has already been produced on this issue linking it to the media culture should extend its scope beyond the media in order to understand the unprecedented advance of populism and its formulas that support ultra-right moveme…
