  • Dimu: An Ancient Character in Modern Bantu Language Tales

    David Westley•ARTICLE•Fabula•2022

This article begins with a table which shows modern words for “ogre”, e. g., zimu in Zulu, irimu in Kikuyu and dimo in Sotho, in Bantu language tales and relates them to the Proto-Bantu term, dimu. Using insights from depth psychology, Aarne-Thompson-Uther classification and, especially, performance theory, the paper examines the character of the ogre in a number of theoretical areas. These include the relationship between tradition and creativit…

  • The Works of Harold Scheub: The Bibliographer's View

David Westley, David M Westley•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2006

This brief introduction touches only on the works involving the oral tradition. Though the bibliography is roughly chronological, I divide the discussion into 1) articles, 2) books, and 3) reference sources. It is important to emphasize that bibliographies record dates of publication, not the date when the work was written. This is all the more the case with the germination of ideas. For example, Harold Scheub told me of his plan to publish a boo…

  • A Select Bibliography of Southern Bantu Praise Poetry

David Westley, David M Westley•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2002

Praise poetry has a special place in southern Africa. The familiar bombastic, histrionic praise poet of the Southern Bantu is at his height in this region. Known mostly for its use as the poetry of kings, praise poetry is, however, the territory of the commoner as well. Young boys in the fields learn to sing their own praises and the praises of others and the items praised include cattle as well as inanimate objects such as bicycles and trains. T…

  • A Select Bibliography of the Works of L opold S dar Senghor

David Westley, David M Westley•ARTICLE•Research in African Literatures•2002

This introduction, rather than attempting to analyze the work of Senghor, an undertaking I leave to the experts represented in this issue, emphasizes the problems of bibliography associated with his oeuvre, considering his poetry and prose as well as translations into English and interviews. It is my belief that in constructing a bibliography it is best to search first for existing bibliographies. Why re-invent the wheel? This is made possible by…
