People of virtue: Reconfiguring religion, power and morality in Cambodia today
Much attention has been given to the 'killing fields' of Cambodia, far less to how the country can recover and heal itself after such an experience. Crucial to this process has been the formation of a new moral order in Cambodia and hence the revival of religion in the country. Certainly, the regeneration of the ritual life of a community may offer ways for people to formulate and relate to their collective stories through symbolism that recalls …
Universal Ethics and Elite Politics: The Limits of Normative Human Rights Theory
This article draws out the strengths and weaknesses of normative international relations theory, which places human rights at the centre of a critique of international society. The attractive and radical nature of the critique of international society, based on the 'human wrongs' committed or acquiesced in by governments and international bodies, is weighed against the conceptual difficulties involved in replacing the classical liberal rights sub…

The Kingdom of Kampuchea, March–October 1945: Japanese–sponsored Independence in Cambodia in World War II
On 12 March 1945, three days after Japanese forces had swept the French from power in Indo-China, Cambodia's young king, Norodom Sihanouk, declared his country's independence, noting as he did so that it would now be known in French as “Kampuchea” rather than as “Cambodge”. The proclamation, made on Japanese advice, ushered in a seven–month interregnum between periods of French control

Normative Poems (Chbap) and Pre-Colonial Cambodian Society
Using the chbap to analyze pre-cotonial Cambodian society is difficult because these gnomic, normative poems are only incidentally concerned with the ways in which that society was put together. Moreover, it is hard to determine how firmly they are anchored in the times when they were written: how useful is a seventeenth century chbap , after all, in helping us to understand eighteenth-century society? Another problem with using them is that they…

Post mortes on the Wars in Indo-China—A Review Article
A major shortcoming in much Western writing about recent events in Indo-China is that the inhabitants of the region are seen as objects of policy rather than as subjects of history. Focusing in this, way leaves out much of the picture and demeans the inhabitants of Indo-China who are largely responsible, after all, for defeating France and the United States. A number of the books reviewed here take a sympathetic insider's view of U.S. interventio…
The Tragedy of Cambodian History
THE WORD tragedy springs to mind in writing about Cambodia, I think, because of the price its people have been made to pay for their Republic and their liberations, for their alliance and their war with the United States, for independence in the 1840s and French protection after that, for Jayavarman VII's visionary Buddhism, which swept up so many people in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and for the deeply ingrained notion that there are b…

An Anti-Vietnamese Rebellion in Early Nineteenth Century Cambodia: Pre-colonial Imperialism and a Pre-Nationalist Response
The “holy man's” ( nak sel ) rebellion against the Vietnamese that broke out in 1820 along the Cambodian-Vietnamese border is the best-documented one of its kind in pre-colonial Cambodia, and makes a useful addition to the literature of such revolts in Buddhist Southeast Asia. Its importance in Cambodian terms lies in its anti-Vietnamese character, the participation in its ranks of Buddhist monks, the collusion of Cambodian authorities, and the w…
