  • Amazonian Storytelling as Co-Learning Within the Land of More-Than-Human Beings and Environmental History from Indigenous Perspectives

Open Access•P K Virtanen, Sidney Da Silva Facunde et al.•ARTICLE•The Oral History Review•2026

Oral histories draw on distinct traditions to narrate more-than-human worlds. In this article, we address their role in materializing the more-than-human perspectives and presences in the Amazon by focusing on the specific Apurinã narrative of Awãi, a story of one Apurinã ancestor. The analysis of Awãi’s story underscores the intimate presence and subjectivity of diverse more-than-human beings and their epistemological dimensions in oral historie…

Academic research results can serve diverse communities and individuals, whilst the research can itself transform researchers in multiple ways. In this article, I examine the significance of more-than-human beings in the process of becoming a researcher and through their roles within research. • Paths and Networks Beyond the Human in Amazonian Social Worlds

    P K Virtanen•CHAPTER•The Lowland South American World•2024

The contemporary demarcated Indigenous lands are along with a few protected areas in Amazonia still remaining green and rich in biodiversity. This diversity has been formed over long period of time, as Indigenous peoples have opened and used numerous paths to move and traverse them since precolonial times. This mobility can be seen in their subsistence methods, exchange relations and trade (Vidal 2000; Peluso and Alexiades 2005; Alexiades 2009; R…

    Open Access•P K Virtanen, Franciso Apurinã•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2024•References: 38

Southwestern Amazonia is one of the most biodiverse areas of the world. In this region, plants have a significant place and role in Indigenous peoples' social relations. They are inseparable actors in human history and crucial social actors within diverse social assemblages. Our article focuses on plant subjectivities in Apurinã ritual encounters, which highlight the elemental role of certain plants in complex relations of various more-than-human…

  • The Role of Guadua Bamboo in Land Management and Indigenous Perspectives on Bamboo Ecosystems in Southwestern Amazonia

    Open Access•P K Virtanen, Franciso Apurinã et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2022

We examine the Indigenous uses, oral histories, and knowledge of native Guadua bamboo species in southwestern Amazonia. Two Guadua species form dense stands in which individual plants die en masse at regular intervals of about 28 years. Scholars suggested that pre-colonial earth builders took advantage of these die-off events as a natural aid in removing the forest to construct geometric earthworks. Our results show that Guadua species have a sig…

    Open Access•P K Virtanen•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 42

This article discusses relational land-based education in the Brazilian Amazon and the idea of intra-dependency. The data produced with the Apurinã presents the intra-relational spaces of knowing created between different beings, human and other-than-human, which contrast with the notion of individual learners. Apurinã co-existence in learning also sheds light on the emotional dimension of Amazonian relational epistemology, while its inclusion of…

Reflecting on my long research experiences in the Purus River region, the states of Acre and Amazonas, Brazil, and my co-living and co-knowing with the Apurinã and Manchineri, I ask how Indigenous sovereignty and power can be accommodated with North-South relations. Indeed, can Indigenous agendas be combined with academic research a…

This essay looks at the construction of personhood in Brazilian Amazonia from the perspective of Indigenous youth. In Amazonian sociocosmology, personhood is constructed relationally, a process in which the body is a distinctive factor. Consequently, during schooling and university studies, young people have responded to and resisted representations and policies that have often silenced Indigenous voices and limited their fabrication of bodies. Combining data obtained by plant macrofossil analyses, archaeological excavations, historical sources, and indigenous oral histories, we focus on the pre-colonial sources of subsistence and domestication processes of some tree species. Our study shows that the societies th…

In this paper, we explore the diverse biocultural manifestations of this socio-cosmology, focusing on the game masters' dynamic roles, histories and …

This article looks at negotiations with state authorities and the evidentiary criteria they create in culturally contrasting contexts when phenomena deal with elements that for the dominant society are conceptualized as "supernatural." We draw from the level of experiences of other-than-human beings, especially spirits and "ungraspable" presences, associal practicesin and of themselves as well as acts of mobilizing those which are meaningful for …
