  • Wolpe, Varèse and the Busoni Effect

    Austin Clarkson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2008

Busoni was the progenitor of a stream of modernism notably absent from the master narrative of twentieth-century music. Varèse and Wolpe, who were among his most important disciples, became mentors to many leading composers, especially in America. A comparison of their early careers, their contacts with Busoni, and their responses to the visual arts leads to a discussion of their association with the New York School of abstract expressionists and…

    Austin Clarkson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2008

Shapey studied with Stefan Wolpe from 1939 to 1942 at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and again from 1946 to 1949 in New York. He was Wolpe's assistant at the Contemporary Music School from 1948 to 1950 and became a leading exponent of his music during the ensuing decades. Wolpe in turn regarded Shapey as the most brilliant and accomplished of his students. After Shapey's studies with Wolpe ended, they enjoyed a fruitful collaboration…

  • Zeus und Elida

Austin Clarkson, Hyesu Shin•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2008

Wolpe's one-act buffa Zeus und Elida was one of three theatrical works composed between 1927 and 1929. Wolpe was influenced by the twelve-tone practices of Josef Matthias Hauer and Arnold Schoenberg, the Bauhaus theater of Oskar Schlemmer, the anarchic iconoclasm of Dada, the jazz music of the 1920s, and especially Ferruccio Busoni's Arlecchino and his aesthetic of opera. An essay on film music that Wolpe published in 1926 provides a link between…

    Austin Clarkson•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2005

This article focuses on a possible link between Ferruccio Busoni and Helmut Lachenmann, composers born nearly three-quarters of a century apart. The centrepiece of the comparison is Lachenmann's composition '... zwei Gefühle...', Musik mit Leonardo, which was presented in Toronto in 2003, an occasion for which a different version of this text was initially written

  • David Tudor's Apprenticeship

    Austin Clarkson•ARTICLE•Leonardo Music Journal•2004

David Tudor's genius was evident from early childhood, but it was not until 1944, when he became a piano student of Irma Wolpe and a composition student of Stefan Wolpe, that Tudor began to realize his true potential. The Wolpes prepared Tudor for his extraordinary career as a path-breaking piano virtuoso and champion of the avant-garde. Tudor's years with the Wolpes culminated in the premiere of Battle Piece in 1950, Tudor's edition of which doc…
