  • Links between sonification and generative music

    Mara Helmuth, Margaret Schedel•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2022•References: 1

The authors investigate works by four composers who employed technology in the creation of music employing audification, sonification and algorithmic composition techniques. These compositions involve interdisciplinary collaborations either with scientific researchers, in the case of Annea Lockwood's Dusk and Carla Scaletti's hàgg, or artificial intelligence, in George Lewis's Voyager, and Bob Sturm's The Waters of Heanny. • Exploring theater experiences among Hong Kong audiences

Open Access•MeiKi Chan, Wing Tung Au et al.•EDITOR•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2019

Audience experience is a bridge between performers and the audience in the performing arts. In this study, we explore how Chinese audiences evaluate a theater performance in Hong Kong. We interviewed 45 professional theater practitioners and identified five theater experience factors. We found that the audience evaluates a theater performance from the perspectives of cognition, emotion, sensation, authenticity, and coherence. Cognition is the ext…

  • Post-linearity as a democratic style for protest theatre in Zimbabwe

Open Access•Kelvin Chikonzo, Margaret Schedel•EDITOR•ARTICLE•Cogent Arts and Humanities•2018

This article investigates the contribution of neo-indigenous post-linear style in creating democracy in politically committed theatre in Zimbabwe. This approach is quite critical in the light of the fact that political theatre or protest theatre in contemporary times in Zimbabwe predicates its practice upon democratic intentions. Whilst there has been a lot of attention on how protest theatre has become a public sphere that promotes civic engagem…

  • A Modern Instantiation of Schillinger's Dance Notation

    Margaret Schedel, Nick Fox-Gieg et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2011•References: 6

In a nearly lost 1934 manuscript, Joseph Schillinger mathematically described a dance notation that mapped human form into Cartesian space. Although this notation was merely a curiosity when it was first proposed, we can now see that it presaged a time when transcoding information and applying procedural rules to create works of art would become commonplace. In this article the authors describe how Schillinger's notation can be applied with moder…

  • Generative Techniques in Hypermedia Performance

Margaret Schedel, Alison Rootberg•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•2009

Generative techniques have become extremely popular in electronic art forms, yet the definition of the word ‘generative’ is elusive, especially when multiple art forms are involved. This article explores several generative multimedia performances and installations in an attempt to find and describe what links these coded art works. Although the works discussed are multimedia, in most instances only one element of a work is generative. The article…
