The Cosmopolitan Figure as Ethical Exemplar
Wolfgang Rihm
The fecundity of Wolfgang Rihm's compositional invention allied to the broad sweep and depth of the intellectual engagement that underpins his work means that any attempt to encapsulate the totality of his ‘style and idea’ is bound to fail. The many facets which interact at all levels in both individual works, and through works that are united within some conceptual framework, are such that analytical exploration will be, at best, partial. Since …
The Blast Has Arrived at the Body
The period from 1979 to 1982 was a key developmental time for Rihm. Starting from his time in Rome as recipient of the German Art Academy Fellowship, he commenced a series of works some of which were not completed until a year or more after his return from Italy. At this point, he began to articulate for himself a relationship with graphic arts and sculpture on the one hand, and poetical texts, often by schizophrenics, on the other. By the beginn…

Religions and the Religion of Animals
This essay focuses on animals as a site for religion and identifies what McGregor calls the “religion of animals.” The construction of the human-animal divide is explored through the Quran, Islamic theology, and philosophy, with particular attention paid to the encyclopedic epistle The Case of the Animals versus Man from tenth-century Iraq. The same human-animal divide is shown to be maintained variously among European philosophers. McGregor argu…
Intertext and Artworks - Reading Islamic Hagiography
Taking a medieval Egyptian Islamic hagiography as its reference point, this study explores dimensions of religious textuality with special interest in the materiality of intertextual sources. Focusing our study on the material and artwork status of the text as object, we begin to retrieve a neglected component of textual studies. Drawing on Genette's idea of the paratext, with its open-ended and evolving conception of textuality, along with the a…

Defining Islam
At a time when many departments of religious studies are expanding their course offerings in Islam, and seeking to integrate Islamic studies into their wider critical conversations on religion, this volume is uniquely welcome. This book is a collection of 24 readings gathered around the critical category Islam. The pieces are from prominent thinkers in their respective areas of specialty and have been well edited, making them all fairly short. Th…

Interpreting Compositional Process in Wolfgang Rihm’s Chiffre Cycle
In Rihm's output the Chiffre Tatble 3works occupy a pivotal position.Despite some prefiguring in certain earlier works, such as the last movement of the fourth quartet, these are works which, as he has said, embody a conscious search for a musical language, a means of expression ('Die Stücke ... sind Versuche, eine Musiksprache zu finden'). 1 The purpose of this article is to try to define key elements of the compositional process which Rihm deve…
