  • Tipu Sultan and the Christians

    J B P More•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•2003•Cited by: 3

This paper investigates the relationship of Tipu Sultan of Mysore with the Christians of southern India, with the objective of clearing up some historical misunderstandings and misconceptions. It argues that Tipu's encounters and dealings with the Christians of both European and Indian origin were in accordance with the spirit of his times and also had a political dimension, often neglected by historians. It also maintains that Tipu did nothing m…

  • A Tamil Muslim Sūfï

    J B P More•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•1999

The Sufi biography has a certain historical value and significance, when we take into account the historical context and the social environment in which the Sufi comes into existence and evolves. In this paper, I have made a modest attempt in this direction, first by portraying the life history of the obscure, little known Tamil Sufi of Pondicherry, saint Sayyid Ahmad Moula Sahib, reconstituted exclusively from oral sources and then by unravellin…

  • Hindu-Christian interaction in Pondicherry, 1700-1900

    Open Access•J B P More•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•1998•References: 1

This paper focuses on the interaction between the Hindus and Christians of Pondicherry between 1700 and 1900, showing how Christianity gained a foothold among the Hindus. On the one hand, pressures, preferences and persuasion were used by the French to induce conversions, while on the other hand certain cultural, social and moral aspects of Hinduism, like vegetarian ism and the caste system, made conversions difficult. The high-handed methods of …

  • Christian‐Muslim influence in Pondicherry, South India

    J B P More•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•1995•References: 1

Christian‐Muslim influence on modern Hindu and Hindu‐inspired movements and religious institutions has always been a neglected area of study. In this paper, we try to fill this gap to some extent, by concentrating our interest and study on the Hindu‐inspired Sri Aurobindo Movement of Pondicherry in the Tamil country. In the course of the paper, we show how values of Islamic and Christian‐West origins have made crucial in‐roads into modern Hindu r…

  • Muslim evolution and conversions in Karikal, South India

    J B P More•ARTICLE•Islam and Christian–Muslim…•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In South Asia, conversions to Islam seem to have been effected through persuasion or pressure or due to the social discontent of some low caste Hindus. Some modern scholars lay more stress on the factor of force than on that of persuasion to explain conversions, while some others subscribe to the role played by the Sufis and the missionaries. In the present study, the veracity of these claims with regard to the Muslims of Karikal is explored. It …

  • Tamil Muslims and Non-Brahmin Atheists, 1925-1940

    Open Access•J B P More•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•1993•Cited by: 6•References: 3

  • The Marakkayar Muslims of Karikal, South India

    J B P More•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The ultraspiracle protein (USP) is the insect ortholog of the mammalian retinoid X receptor (RXR). Fundamental questions concern the functional role of USP as the heterodimerization partner of insect nuclear receptors such as the ecdysone receptor. The crystallographic structures of the ligand binding domain of USPs of Heliothis virescens and Drosophila melanogaster solved recently show that helix 12 is locked in an antagonist conformation raisin…
