“A Living Tradition”: Tracing Chinese Character Divination from Imperial China to Contemporary Taiwan
This article traces one method of divination, Chinese character divination, from imperial China to contemporary Taiwan. In this article, I contribute to the understanding of conceptual boundaries in the Chinese context by discussing the rift between "old" and "new" concepts as well as "inside" and "outside" perspectives on these concepts. This paper analyzes how fate is understood in imperial Chinese anecdotes on character divination ( cezi 測字).
