Using Score Equating and Measurement Invariance to Examine the Flynn Effect in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
The Flynn effect (FE; i.e., increase in mean IQ scores over time) is commonly viewed as reflecting population shifts in intelligence, despite the fact that most FE studies have not investigated the assumption of score comparability. Consequently, the extent to which these mean differences in IQ scores reflect population shifts in cognitive abilities versus changes in the instruments used to measure these abilities is unclear. In this study, we us…
Personality
Selecting a single psychotherapeutic orientation can be a challenge for counselor education students. The authors examined the relationship between counseling theory selection and personality variables of students enrolled in a counseling theories course. A discriminant function analysis was used to identify the personality traits that would determine theoretical orientation choice. No statistically significant results were found. Results indicat…
An Empirical Investigation of the Efficacy of Multimedia Instruction in Counseling Skill Development
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of multimedia instruction on students' counseling skill development. The participants were 73 beginning-level counselor education students (20 men and 53 women, ages ranging from 24 to 47 years). Ratings of students' pre- and posttest video counseling tapes were used to assess the effects of the multimedia approach. The results found that there was no statistically significant difference among …
Moving beyond g
Results from high-stakes tests of intelligence are used everyday to make decisions that impact the lives of individuals and families. Although many clinicians know how to calculate test scores, few have a firm understanding of the construct intelligence, how tests measure intelligence, and more importantly, how results from intelligence tests may be used to develop client specific recommendations and interventions. © 2002, MCB UP Limited
Relative Roles of Cognitive Ability and Practical Intelligence in the Prediction of Success
Initial investigations into the construct of practical intelligence have identified a new general factor of practical intelligence (gp), which is believed to be independent of general cognitive ability. This construct, gp, is also believed to be a better predictor of success than cognitive ability, personality, or any combination of variables independent of gp. The existence of this construct and its independence from Spearman's g is, however, un…
Identifying g
Provides a brief description of Spearman’s g which has become the cornerstone for most theories of intelligence and highlights the social, scientific and political controversy in which this is surrounded. Discusses the identification of g before covering the criticisms, the physiological manifestations and the practical and social implications together with education. Summarizes that this construct routinely accounts for more variance than all ot…
