Training recovery support paraprofessionals through a behavioural health internship
As the need for global mental health support grows, there is simultaneously a shortage of behavioural health professionals. This shortage creates a treatment gap in behavioural healthcare, calling for paraprofessionals, such as recovery support paraprofessionals (RSPs), to take on more mental health responsibilities to increase access to care. Despite these growing demands, training opportunities for RSPs remain limited. This study presents a sub…
Discrimination, social support, and wellness among Bipoc counseling students
We investigated the relationship between discrimination, wellness, and social support among counseling students who identified as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC). Results indicated that perceived discrimination negatively predicted counseling students' wellness, and social support played a buffering role in the negative effect of perceived discrimination on wellness
Counselor Trainee Bias
Using a 2 × 2 analog design, 138 counselors-in-training (CITs) were randomly assigned to vignettes to assess how they differently attributed blame and empathy toward a fictional client with a co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder following a relapse. Vignettes varied by SUD (alcohol/crystal meth) and relapse determinants (intrapersonal/interpersonal). CITs attributed more blame to clients relapsing due to int…
A Counselor Education’s Community Clinics’ Shift to Telehealth During Covid-19
COVID-19 caused a sudden shift for counselors-in-training and supervisors to transition from in-person counselling to telehealth counseling and supervision. Counselors-in-training and supervisors at large were forced to complete a rapid transition to telehealth. This article provides a detailed account of the transition made at a large Southeastern University to telehealth and takes a broader look at practical implications and recommendations tha…
Virtues as Correlates and Predictors of Posttraumatic Stress and Growth
We examined the virtues of optimism, hope, and gratitude as potential correlates and predictors of posttraumatic stress (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in a sample of trauma survivors ( N = 151). Results indicated that each of these qualities significantly correlated with PTS and PTG. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that optimism, hope, and gratitude each significantly predicted PTS, with hope being the greatest predictor of PTG. C…
Posttraumatic Growth in Trauma Survivors
Individuals often turn to religion or spirituality to cope with or make sense of trauma. In this study of 222 university students who reported a history of trauma, we examined whether God representation and attachment to God were associated with posttraumatic outcomes. Trauma outcomes include both the negative impacts of trauma and the perceived posttraumatic growth (PTG) that can occur in trauma survivors. Results revealed that both an authorita…
Cultural Humility with Religious and Spiritually Diverse Women of Color Clients
Cultural humility, as part of a therapist’s multicultural orientation, can help facilitate a strong working alliance with clients across diverse cultural backgrounds. Given that little research has attended to how the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, and religion/spirituality (R/S) influence counseling dyads, we tested the factor structure and provided evidence for the reliability and construct validity of the Cultural Humility Scale (CHS…
Conserving resources during chronic disaster
This study extends research on DRL and coping to the context of chronic disasters. A nuanced treatment of resource loss (accounting for specific item wordings) suggests that although DRL in general may influence negative R/S coping, only some types of resource loss (energetic) from an ongoing-chronic disaster affect both one's current meaning-focused coping and trauma symptoms. In contrast to negative R/S coping behaviors (e.g., doubt), positive …
Evaluating the Availability and Quality of HIV/Aids Services and Supports for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
We used a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework to conduct a needs assessment of the availability and quality of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) services for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD) in the Atlanta metropolitan area. We present the findings of a three-phase research project. Findings from the research informs organizations and policymakers o…
Correlates and predictors of anti-transgender prejudice
Research investigating etiology, or beliefs and values related to prejudice toward transgender individuals, is in the early stages. This study examined correlates and predictors of anti-transgender prejudice from a sample of 298 undergraduates at a large, urban university in the Southeastern United States. Measures of traditional values and beliefs, such as right-wing authoritarianism, and social dominance orientation, as well as social identity …

Motivational Interviewing Training
We examined student outcomes following a semester-length course in Motivational Interviewing (MI) through 2 different pilot studies. Through Study 1 we examined within-group differences, whereas Study 2 allowed us to examine between-group differences. Both studies revealed gains in counselors'-in-training knowledge, attitudes, and empathic helping responses following participation in a semester-long course in MI
