Counselor Interpersonal Power Base Preference
Forty counseling students were assessed on their power base (i.e., expert, referent, and legitimate) preferences, which were found to vary as a function of client problem, but not experience level
An examination of the complementarity of interpersonal behavior
The complementarity of behavior as moderated by the base rates of consequent behaviors, the differences attributable to friendly and hostile antecedent behaviors, and octant versus quadrant codes was examined. Complementarity was defined using 3 different but overlapping models: R. Carson (1969), D. Kiesler (1983), and J. Wiggins (1979). The Interpersonal Communication Rating Scale (ICRS; S. Strong & Hills, 1986) behavioral ratings on 80 female d…
Evaluating Holland's and Gati's vocational-interest models
and Implications Gati's (1991) conclusion that Holland's model was flawedand that his own three-g'roup-partition model of RIASEC typeswas superior is questionable on both empirical and logicalgrounds. To the contrary, we found considerable support for thesuperiority of Holland's model. The results of the three separateanalyses, each examining Gati's and Holland's models fromvarying perspectives, provide evidence of the superiority ofHolland's mod…
Factor structure of the Working Alliance Inventory.
The Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) was completed after the 1st psychotherapy session by 84 university counseling center clients and 15 therapists rating their work with 123 clients
Factor Structure of the Non-Cognitive Questionnaire-Revised Across Samples of Black and White College Students
The predictive validity of the Non-Cognitive Questionnaire (Tracey and Sedlacek, 1984) has been demonstrated in past research; however, some of the scales of this instrument have been found to have relatively low reliabilities. In an effort to improve measurement, the NCQ was revised and the reliability and validity examined on black and white samples of college entrants. First, the fit of the revised NCQ to the eight hypothesized constructs was …
Natural and professional help
Differences in the helping interactions formed by mental health professionals, divorce lawyers, and mutual help group leaders were examined. Fourteen members of each of these three helper groups (N = 42) met independently with a coached client presenting marital difficulties. Using ratings of ability to ameliorate the personal and emotional problems presented, the 42 helpers were divided (using a median split) into successful and less successful …
Prediction of College Graduation Using Noncognitive Variables by Race
The validity of the Noncognitive Questionnaire (NCQ) in predicting graduation after 5 and 6 years by race was assessed. The NCQ was found to be predictive of graduation for both Black and White students
Distress and help‐seeking as a function of person‐environment fit and self‐efficacy
Self-efficacy, indicators of distress (state anxiety and frequency of physical symptoms), help-seeking (visits to the campus health center, an outside physician, and a counselor), and two measures of person-environment (P-E) fit were assessed on 152 college students and examined in a LISREL model. The two P-E fit measures were perceived discrepancy, the profile difference score between how each student would like their residence floor and how eac…
Help seeking and problem perception among Asian Americans
Single Case Research
Single case research is proposed as a valuable means of involving counselors in the research process, providing feedback to the counselor and supervisor and gathering accountability data. Yet relatively little research of this type is conducted. One reason for this paucity of single case research is a lack of familiarity. If one is familiar with single case research, it is usually with case study methodologies and not with the intensive N of 1 de…
