Satisfaction with life is a complex construct, with many implications for overall well‐being. This study explored the psychometric characteristics of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) scores on Mexican dialect Spanish‐speaking participants who endured the 2017 Mexican earthquake. Participants completed linguistically and culturally adapted versions of the SWLS, Flourishing Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Spiritual Fortitude, and Multi…

  • Listen closer’: Home-delivered meal volunteers’ understanding of their role in suicide intervention

    Open Access•Jordan B Westcott, Matthew C Fullen et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2024•References: 17

Suicide in later life is a pressing public health concern, which has likely been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many older adults who need mental health treatment do not have access to necessary services and training for mental health providers to support older adults experiencing suicidality is limited. Open Access•Stacey Mcelroy-Heltzel, Laura Shannonhouse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2022

Across the globe, COVID‐19 has disproportionately affected the physical and mental health of several vulnerable groups. Organisational scientists are paying increasing attention to humility, following a larger trend in scholarship highlighting the relational and interdependent nature of leadership and business. A growing body of evidence identifies humility as vital to effective organisational leadership, facilitating positive organisational outcomes, such as lower voluntary turnover and greater follower job satisfaction. To date, research on the subject has focus…

  • Conserving resources during chronic disaster: Impacts of religious and meaning-focused coping on Botswana drought survivors

Laura Shannonhouse, Laura R Shannonhouse et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2019

This study extends research on DRL and coping to the context of chronic disasters. A nuanced treatment of resource loss (accounting for specific item wordings) suggests that although DRL in general may influence negative R/S coping, only some types of resource loss (energetic) from an ongoing-chronic disaster affect both one's current meaning-focused coping and trauma symptoms. In contrast to negative R/S coping behaviors (e.g., doubt), positive …

Cultural immersion (CI) is a common pedagogy to prepare counselors for work with diverse clients. However, little is known regarding how CI is used across counselor education programs. This exploratory study established quantitative baseline data on how programs prepare, implement, and evaluate CI. Current practice is compared with CI components found in the literature, particularly those established in the multicultural immersion experience mode…

  • Suicide Intervention Training for Counselor Trainees: A Quasi-Experimental Study on Skill Retention

    Open Access•Laura Shannonhouse, Laura R Shannonhouse et al.•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 24

The authors used a quasi-experimental design to explore the effect of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training on 126 counselor trainees. The authors discuss the developmental benefits of incorporating similar training into counselor education. Implications for skill measurement are also considered
