Kolonialisme?
A Competing Harvester, Stakeholder, and Environmental Threat
What kind of positions have reindeer been given in Finnish forestry science by research institution, Metsäntutkimuslaitos (Metla)? Because of overlapping zones of utilization, reindeer for the most part appeared as a threat to national wealth and a problem to harvesting, as well as spoiling ecosystem productivity. They were perceived as a harmful species that destroyed and “killed” saplings and decreased the forest areal. Closer to the present da…

Museums as arenas for the production and circulation of knowledge on Sámi cultures, societies and identities
Nordic museology 2019 • 3, s.5-7 which the Sámi build their identities and voice their demands. We are particularly interested in exploring how different discourses, and institutional and societal contexts, in this case museums or exhibition arenas, have had impact on and continue to impact the production of knowledge on Sámi cultures, histories and identities across time. The contributors are museologists, historians, anthropologists, archaeologis…
Cultural heritage of the Sámi in Finnish national histories 1894–2009
How has Sámi cultural heritage been incorporated into the national histories of Finland? How have the national and academic discourses constrained and enabled ways of writing about the Sámi in this genre? A complete change from a hierarchizing and at worst racializing perspective to a more matter-of-fact approach is detectable quite late on, from the 1980s onwards. The Sámi have remained on the periphery of Finnish historiography, but they have b…
Sami Counter-Narratives of Colonial Finland. Articulation, Reception and the Boundaries of the Politically Possible
The Sami have articulated two kinds of counter-narratives of their treatment by the state of Finland: the state failing to provide welfare services and as a colonizer of the Sami. The Sami counter-narratives are discussed in light of their evolution and their perception in the interactional context of the Finnish state. The colonization narrative, which replaced the welfare narrative, has proven to be hard to legitimize in a Finnish context. Even…
Towards a Multiangled Study of Reindeer Agency, Overlapping Environments, and Human-Animal Relationships
This paper discusses the applicability of theories about animal agency to studies of human–animal relationships in the academic disciplines of environmental history and archaeology. Both disciplines have a traditional epistemological stance that neglects the perceptual worlds of the animal. One example is presented of efforts to write from the other side of the epistemological chasm, on the environment of the animal , as well as Morten Tønnessen’…
