Anna-Antigone and Freud-Oedipus
Starting from a supervisee's declaration that: ‘psychoanalysis is lesbian!’, this article narrates the complex history between psychoanalysis, non-normative gender and homosexuality. Touching on Anna Freud's long relationship with Dorothy Burlingham, Sigmund Freud's letter to the mother of a homosexual, Magnus Hirschfeld's pioneering research into gender and sexuality in Berlin, queer theorist Leo Bersani's difficult experiences in psychoanalysis…
Is Another Psychoanalysis Emerging
This article analyzes and contextualizes findings of an online survey documenting transformations in psychoanalytic practice. The findings indicate that a number of contemporary practitioners challenge the premise that psychoanalysis is only available to a higher-income group, also associated with mainstream gender and sexualities, and racial and ethnic ideals of whiteness. The first step of a multistage exploratory research study gathered a samp…
Gender Transition Between Life and Death
Hate Up to My Couch
This article is based on the author's experience working as a psychoanalyst in Philadelphia's barrio in the 1990s, which led her to meditate on the psychology of racism, segregation, and other forms of intolerance of difference and otherness. The author argues that no analyst can be immune to the cultural context in which they work and that the simple fact that psychoanalysis is not available to the poor constitutes a form of racism. It further a…
Beyond Fear and Pity
This essay attempts to expand the traditional model of negative countertransference by giving it a Lacanian twist. The author uses theories and concepts from Freud, Winnicott, and Lacan in order to explore the affective dimension of countertransference in two cases of trans-identified patients. In the first case, the author shows that wanting to do good was counterproductive, while in the second vignette maintaining a position of neutrality allow…

The respiratory drive
The central phrase linking the coronavirus pandemic to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations to the climate change crisis is I can't breathe. What, if anything, does psychoanalysis have to say about breathing? Looking at Freud, Ferenczi, Rank, Winnicott, Lacan, and some current philosophical thoughts, the authors consider a neglected respiratory drive and its relationship to the death drive, giving us new insight into this unprecedented moment
La « réelité » du corps trans entre beauté et plasticité
A Phantom Phallus
Responding to Straayer’s article linking the phenomenon of phantom limbs to the experience of trans men, I highlight common features between neuroscience and psychoanalysis. My commentary questions a few claims made by Straayer. Applying psychoanalytic concepts, I refer to a short story by Christine Brooke-Rose and to a notorious case by Robert Stoller that has been neglected in psychoanalytic literature, a book-length study of a female patient w…

Transgender Psychoanalysis
Drawing on the author’s clinical work with gender-variant patients, Transgender Psychoanalysis: A Lacanian Perspective on Sexual Difference argues for a depathologizing of the transgender experience, while offering an original analysis of sexual difference. We are living in a "trans" moment that has become the next civil rights frontier. By unfixing our notions of gender, sex, and sexual identity, challenging normativity and essentialisms, trans …
Depathologizing Trans
Pushing further the analyses of Please Select Your Gender: From the Invention of Hysteria to the Democratizing of Transgenderism, the author projects a new light on transgender manifestations. Drawing on her clinical experience as a psychoanalyst working with gender-variant analysands, she argues that those compelled to change gender often do it because they are facing the most crucial issues of life and death. What is at stake is less gender flu…

A infância não é coisa de crianças
In the beginning was the Word" goes the Gospel, a beginning that precedes the temporary arrival of the infant to the world. Etymologically, infans refers to someone who does not speak. Is an infant a human before becoming human? If infancy is the stage where language is already present before speech develops, it appears interesting to explore the phenomenon of autism in which speech is absent or at least deficient. Autism is also a manifestation …
