Application of Kennedy's Classification of Edentulism in Palaeoepidemiology
This study presents a palaeoepidemiological analysis of edentulism in an early medieval population from northern Serbia, using the Kennedy Classification system as a diagnostic tool. Drawing on data from three necropolises, Site 40—Potes Gornje Sajlovo, Čik, and Pionirska Ulica, located in the Bačka district and dated between the 6th and 9th centuries ad during Avar dominance, this study explores edentulism, not only as a dental condition but als…
Evaluating an osteoid osteoma of the zygomatic bone
A microarchitectural assessment of the gluteal tuberosity suggests two possible patterns in entheseal changes
OBJECTIVES: Macroscopic entheseal forms show two main features: predominant signs of bony formation or resorption. To understand the development of these forms, we investigated microarchitectural differences between the macroscopic proliferative and resorptive forms of the gluteus maximus enthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The macromorphological analysis of entheseal changes (EC) was based on the Villotte, visual scoring system for fibrous entheses…
Morphological appearance of muscle attachment sites on lower limbs
The present study analysed macromorphological characteristics of the muscle attachment sites of lower limbs, hypothesising that everyday physical activities influence the macromorphology of the bone at the entheses. Our specific goals were to investigate how different habitual activities influence the morphology of the muscle attachment sites of lower limbs in two different medieval populations from Serbia: agricultural versus horse-riding popula…
The case of the pregnant woman from the medieval site of “Preko Slatine” in Omoljica
The paper presents the case of the pregnant woman discovered at the medieval necropolis of ?Preko Slatine? in Omoljica, a village near Pancevo. The necropolis is dated to the period of the 12th-13th century AD. It deals with a woman aged 25-30 (probably around 28 years old) in the advanced stages of pregnancy, discovered in grave No. 13. This paper presents the possible conditions that led to the death of this woman, but also the problems faced b…
Health status of children in ancient Sirmium
This paper presents diseases which directly leave traces on osteological material (enamel hypoplasia, caries, traumatic conditions, haematological disorders, metabolic diseases and middle ear inflammation) and diseases that leave no visible marks on bones, and may indeed be the direct cause of death of children in ancient Sirmium. In paleodemographic research, child mortality rate is an important element of a population?s progress. Child mortalit…
Bone microarchitecture at muscle attachment sites
The studies of entheses in bioarchaeology attempted to reconstruct the habitual physical activities of past populations. However, the studies of microarchitecture of the underlying bone are still lacking despite well‐known potential of bone internal microarchitecture to reflect mechanical loading. It is unknown whether different morphological expressions of entheseal changes (ECs) correlate with the microstructural characteristics of the underlin…
Representing children in excavated cemeteries
Children are often under-represented in excavated populations due to the poor survival of their bones. Using a group of medieval burials from Serbia, our researchers examine the differential survival of children and of different parts of the body within the same terrain, and rightly urge us to take these factors into consideration before attempting demographic, ritual or social interpretations
Adolescent health in medieval Serbia
Porotic lesions in immature skeletons from Stara Torina, late medieval Serbia
Porotic lesions of immature skeletons have been attracting scientific attention for more than a century. These changes have been documented worldwide and are considered to be one of the indicators of health and/or nutritional status of past human populations. These lesions have frequently been referred to as a nutritional stress indicator, a manifestation of iron-deficiency anaemia, and a condition caused by chronic infections. In this study, 327…
