An actor-network-theory informed normative framework for the governance of AI-systems in medicine
The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on clinical decision-making has become a focal point within a multitude of ethical, legal, and social discussions. Examining concrete use cases reveals that the introduction of an AI-system as a new actant in clinical practice changes the whole context with its relationships, roles, and routines. To better understand these changes, an interpretative framework can help to trace such transformations and un…
Toward an information-theoretic model of morphological fusion based on an efficient tradeoff of memory and surprisal
Inflectional morphology refers to the mapping from grammatical information to surface forms, which are typically realized as morphemes . This mapping often exhibits fusion , where several abstract features are expressed in a single morpheme that cannot be decomposed into meaningful parts. Here, we discuss crosslinguistic generalizations of morphological fusion. We argue that fusion reflects principles of efficient processing, as formalized by the…
A Christian Synthesis of Aristotle's Character Friendship
Friendship is a virtue that holds significant potential as a method of Christian virtue formation. The article begins with Aristotle's concept of character friendship found in the Nicomachean Ethics as an integral part of his overall account of moral goodness. The Aristotelian account serves as a valuable foundation as there are many elements that can be adopted in a Christian approach. Next the article engages the uniquely Christian understandin…
Advancing new metrics for wildfire smoke exposure: Case study in Alaska to bridge public health, climate adaptation, and fire management
Wildfire activity is increasing globally due to climate change, with implications for air quality and public health. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) from wildfire smoke contributes to cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality, adverse birth outcomes, mental health stressors, and disruptions to food security and traditional livelihoods. However, quantifying health risks remains difficult due to sparse monitoring, challenges in isolating wildfire…

By-degree Health and Economic Impacts of Lyme Disease, Eastern and Midwestern United States
Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States (U.S.). This paper assesses how climate change may influence LD incidence in the eastern and upper Midwestern U.S. and the associated economic burden. We estimated future Ixodes scapularis habitat suitability and LD incidence with a by-degree approach using variables from an ensemble of multiple climate models. We then applied estimates for present-day and projected ha…
A blueprint for strengthening climate and health literacy through professional adaptability
Responding effectively to intensifying climate change hazards to protect human health in personal and professional settings is an urgent and pressing challenge. This will require collaboration and subject matter expertise of people across the life course and occupations. In this perspective piece, we build on a previously published compilation of climate and health literacy elements to explore tangible opportunities to strengthen climate and heal…
Modeling task effects in human reading with neural network-based attention
Remoteness was a blessing, but also a potential downfall’: Traditional/subsistence and store-bought food access in remote Alaska during the Covid-19 pandemic
Objective: This study employs a strengths-based approach to assess food access in remote Alaska during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying both the negative consequences of the pandemic on store-bought and subsistence/traditional food access and compensatory strategies used. Design: As a part of a larger study on the impacts of COVID-19 on daily life remote Alaskan communities, study data presented here were collected through key informant intervi…
In the beginning, I said I wouldn't get it.”: Hesitant adoption of the Covid-19 vaccine in remote Alaska between November 2020 and 2021
Achieving sufficient COVID-19 vaccination coverage has been hindered in many areas by vaccine hesitancy. Many studies based on large survey samples have characterized vaccine refusal, but there are fewer in-depth qualitative studies that explore hesitant adoption: the middle-ground between vaccine acceptance and refusal, and how individuals may move across this continuum depending on their lived experience. For this paper, we use the narratives o…
Morpheme Ordering Across Languages Reflects Optimization for Processing Efficiency
The ordering of morphemes in a word displays well-documented regularities across languages. Previous work has explained these in terms of notions such as semantic scope, relevance, and productivity. Here, we test a recently formulated processing theory of the ordering of linguistic units, the efficient tradeoff hypothesis (Hahn et al., 2021). The claim of the theory is that morpheme ordering can partly be explained by the optimization of a tradeo…
Information Theory as a Bridge Between Language Function and Language Form
Formal and functional theories of language seem disparate, because formal theories answer the question of what a language is, while functional theories answer the question of what functions it serves. We argue that information theory provides a bridge between these two approaches, via a principle of minimization of complexity under constraints. Synthesizing recent work, we show how information-theoretic characterizations of functional complexity …

Collaborative climate mitigation and adaptation planning with university, community, and municipal partners: A case study in Anchorage, Alaska
Cities around the world are creating formal planning documents proposing local actions to mitigate and prepare for the impacts of climate change. Despite a growing number of examples of such plans and “toolkits” that outline the process for undertaking these planning efforts, many cities are still struggling to know where to start. Furthermore, meta-analyses of existing climate action plans show that many suffer from similar limitations including…

Defining and Achieving Health Equity in Genomic Medicine
The potential of genomics to improve health comes with the peril that the benefits will not be equitably available to all populations. Existing health disparities can be exacerbated if the implementation of genomic medicine does not intentionally focus on health equity. Defining what health equity means in the context of genomics and outlining how it can be achieved is important for the future of the field. Strategies to improve health equity i…

Region‐dependent patterns of trabecular bone growth in the human proximal femur: A study of 3D bone microarchitecture from early postnatal to late childhood period
OBJECTIVES: Parallel with body growth and development, bone structure in non-adults is reorganized to achieve the particular design observed in mature individuals. We traced the changes in three-dimensional trabecular microarchitectural design during the phases of locomotor maturation to clarify how human bone adapts to mechanical demands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Micro-CT was performed on biomechanically-relevant subregions of the proximal femur (…
The assessment of adipocere to estimate the post-mortem interval - a skeleton from the tidelands
This paper discusses the discovery of a skeletonized water corpse with hollow bones filled with adipocere found in the tidelands of the river Elbe close to Otterndorf (Wesermarsch, Cuxhaven). Through macroscopic and microscopic methods, the existing adipocere was described. The post-mortem interval was assessed by a comparison of the radiocarbon data and the indications about the preservation of adipocere from the literature. The investigation ha…

Bone microarchitecture at muscle attachment sites: The relationship between macroscopic scores of entheses and their cortical and trabecular microstructural design
The studies of entheses in bioarchaeology attempted to reconstruct the habitual physical activities of past populations. However, the studies of microarchitecture of the underlying bone are still lacking despite well‐known potential of bone internal microarchitecture to reflect mechanical loading. It is unknown whether different morphological expressions of entheseal changes (ECs) correlate with the microstructural characteristics of the underlin…

The Lalitavistara is one of the most influential hagiographies of the Buddha. It has been known in Sanskrit since the early days of modern studies of Buddhism, but was long available only in inadequate editions. That has now changed with the publication of the edition of K. Hokazono, now complete in three volumes. The present paper discusses something of the history of the study of the text, Hokazono's edition, and another recent book by G. Ducoe…
