  • Contingent A Priori Truths as Original Declarations. Some Comments on Marco Ruffino

    Open Access•Eleonora Orlando•ARTICLE•Critica•2025

In his book Contingent A Priori Truths, Marco Ruffino proposes to understand Kripke’s examples of the contingent a priori in terms of utterances with a declarative illocutionary force. I think that Marco’s approach is very original and insightful, and he provides us with many detailed and thoughtful considerations in its support. Although I agree with the general picture, there are some aspects that remain a bit obscure to me, which will be the f…

  • Epítetos e insultos de grupo en español

Andrés Saab, Eleonora Orlando•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2021

In this paper, we further elaborate on a syntactic ambiguity between slurs and epithets first noticed in Orlando, Eleonora & Andrés Saab. 2020b. A stereotype semantics for syntactically ambiguous slurs. Analytic Philosophy 61(2). 101–129. Here, we discuss in detail the large theoretical implications of such an ambiguity both for the proper analysis of binominal constructions in Spanish (e.g., el idiota de Juan ) and for the way in which it is adv…

    Open Access•Eleonora Orlando, Andrés Saab•ARTICLE•Critica•2020

  • Depicting Borgesian Possible Worlds

Eleonora Orlando•ARTICLE•CR The New Centennial Review•2011

Depicting Borgesian Possible Worlds Eleonora Orlando (bio) The main purpose of this essay is to show that the philosophical concept of a possible world is part of Borges's fiction: particularly in "The Garden of Forking Paths." The main thesis is as follows: possible worlds are part of the narrative content of the two stories thereby involved, the main one and the novel embedded in it, namely, the book-labyrinth owed to Ts'ui Pên; moreover, the c…

  • Fictional Names without Fictional Objects

    Open Access•Eleonora Orlando•ARTICLE•Critica•2008

In this paper, I criticize Mark Sainsbury’s proposal concerning the semantic analysis of fictional discourse, as it has been put forward in chapter 6 of his Reference without Referents. His main thesis is that fictional names do not refer, and hence statements containing them are genuinely false and must be interpreted in terms of true paraphrases, arrived at on a case-by-case basis. In my opinion, the proposal has a problem derived from the fact…
