Young people and second chance schools in Spain: Diversity of profiles, expectations and results
Second Chance Schools were created for students without a secondary school certificate. These students are often seen as having similar social profiles and negative school experiences, but this study shows their diversity. How Psychological Symptoms Mediate Perceived Covid-19 Stress and Identity Distress in Emerging Adults
The global pandemic has been associated with substantial elevation in mental health problems among emerging adults. In this study, we examined psychological symptoms in relation to perceived COVID-19 stress and disturbances with identity development (identity distress) among university students in Canada and in Spain during the second wave of the pandemic. Spanish students indicated greater identity distress than their Canadian counterpart, and t…
The interface of identity distress and psychological problems in students’ adjustment to University
Identity distress, psychological symptoms, and adjustment to university (academic, social, and person‐emotional) were examined among students in Spain ( N = 241; M age = 19.0 (1.6), Md = 19; 84% female) and Canada ( N = 531; M age = 19.8 (2.2), Md = 19; 82% female). The expected positive relationships were found between these variables. Similarly, increased identity distress of Spanish students and greater maladjustment at university for those in…
A Closer Look at Economic Context in Identity Distress, Identity Development, and Adjustment to University
In this study, national rates of youth unemployment were used as a proxy for economic disruption and stability in Spain and Canada, respectively. Students in Spain (N = 95, Mage = 19.3, (1.6); mdn = 19 years; 86% female) and Canada (N = 331; Mage = 19.6 (2.2); mdn = 19 years; 82% female) completed the Identity D…

In the academic disturbance context, students reported increased stress an…
How students perceive the university's mission in a Spanish university: Liberal versus entrepreneurial education
This study explores the extent to which undergraduate students perceive a dichotomy between a liberal vs. an entrepreneurial model of university. This research is important in that it compares the stated aims of university education, particularly within the Bologna Process, with students' expectations regarding liberal education and employability. A Likert-type questionnaire containing 25 statements reflecting liberal and entrepreneurial features…
