    Open Access•Sara Uhnoo, Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•Sociologisk Forskning•2022

  • From learning to labour to custody for the precariat

    Open Access•Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 16

The globally reported riots in the poor high-rise suburbs of Sweden's metropolitan districts in 2013 were stark manifestations of the increased social and economic inequality of the past 30 years. Large groups of young adults acted out their unarticulated claims for social justice. In the light of the riots, it is relevant to ask whether any trace of resistance or protest can be found in the compulsory school where the young people from these nei…

  • Learning Processes and Social Mobilization in a Swedish Metropolitan Hip-Hop Collective

    Open Access•D Beach, Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Based on ethnographic research on the encounter between local culture and schools in multicultural suburban areas, this article explores possibilities suggested by autonomous learning activities in a hip-hop collective that may have a potential to break urban segregation patterns. The collective’s artistic production raises questions that have not been answered in schools, such as how the increasing class divisions between different parts of the …

  • School, Youth Culture and Territorial Stigmatization in Swedish Metropolitan Districts

    Open Access•Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•Young•2011•Cited by: 22•References: 11

This article deals with processes of marginalization and patterns of segregation in contemporary Sweden that have transformed the former welfare state. During the 1990s we saw the growth of new forms of poverty in the multi-ethnic suburbs of the metropolitan districts of Sweden. The schools in these suburbs are still wrestling with many problems. If these schools wish to reclaim credibility, one way might be to understand and to learn from the to…

  • From learning to labour to learning for marginality

    D Beach, Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 28

In this article, using data from ethnographic research, we try to present some glimpses of the way education is described as an experience and possibility ‘from below’, by pupils who grow up and study in schools in the most segregated and territorially stigmatized suburbs on the outskirts of our major cities. What we feel they describe is an experience of schooling for surviving the social and economic consequences of curtailed citizenship in a p…

  • Ungdomskulturen och det Andra

    Open Access•Ove Sernhede•ARTICLE•Kulturella Perspektiv – Svensk…•1994

The article deals with white, male-dominated youth subcultures and their fascination with black expressive cultures. From the early days of jazz to the contemporary hip-hop scene white youth styles in music, dance, clothing and verbal communication have been inspired by black culture. Research in this field has been carried out within the traditions of cultural studies. The basic assumption is that Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean music cultures …
