  • Food Evidence from a Nineteenth-Century Kitchen House in Charleston, South Carolina

    Open Access•Chantel E White, Katherine M Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Archaeology•2025•References: 16

A two-story kitchen house located at 51 Meeting Street, downtown Charleston, was a place of food preparation and cooking during the 19th century. From 1808 to 1865, enslaved cooks worked long hours creating meals for the many people who resided on this urban lot. A useful approach to understanding the complexities of enslaved people’s daily lives is through the study of organic materials preserved inside the walls of standing historical structure…

  • Ancient Conflagration

    Open Access•Melissa Goodman‐Elgar, Melissa A Goodman-Elgar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2023•References: 42

In this study, we assess competing interpretations of a burnt ceremonial structure from the terminal Middle Formative period (ca. 300–100 BCE) by analyzing the stepped platform mound at Chiripa, Bolivia, through a systematic reconstruction of the fire that destroyed it. We developed a model of potential fire pathways, their social contexts, and material indicators. Our approach contrasts incipient fires from accident or arson to planned fires ini…

  • Formative Exchange in the Andean Titicaca Basin

    C A Hastorf, Katherine M Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Ñawpa Pacha•2023•References: 79

The Andean mountains have a mosaic distribution of resources, and no one place has everything a community requires for subsistence, social life and ritual. Therefore, from the very beginning of human habitation there is evidence for short-and long-distance movement and trade. Settled societies in the Andes most commonly used llama caravans that crisscrossed the mountains and highland valleys, although these are hard to identify. Here we present s…

  • Clinical and Genetic Correlates of Bipolar Disorder With Childhood-Onset Attention Deficit Disorder

    Open Access•Nicolás A Núñez, Brandon J Coombes et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

BD+cADHD was associated with a greater number of comorbidities and reduced response to mood stabilizing treatments. The higher ADHD PRS for the BD+cADHD group may reflect a greater influence of genetic factors on early presentation of ADHD symptoms

  • Paleoindian settlement of the high-altitude Peruvian Andes

Open Access•Kurt Rademaker, Gregory Hodgins et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2014

Mountain dwellers of the Pleistocene Humans colonized the inhospitable high Andes at least 11.5 thousand years ago. Rademaker et al. unearthed evidence of hunter-gatherer occupation at heights of almost 4500 m in Peru in two open-air sites. The sites contained more than 750 tools, including likely spearheads and scrapers. A nearby rockshelter with sooted ceilings and floor detritus may have been a campsite. The sites were probably used seasonally…

  • Specialized Meat-Eating in the Holocene

    John W Rick, Katherine M Moore•CHAPTER•Meat-eating & human evolution•2001

Like many ethnographically known hunter-gatherers themselves, anthropologists spend a great deal of time conversing and arguing about meat-eating and its partial correlate, hunting. The ability to procure meat, once felt to be a hallmark of human intelligence and culture, is now highly contested at various stages of human evolution. Although primates are clearly involved in hunting, with increasingly extensive modem records of how meat procuremen…

• Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of human dietary change in the Georgia Bight

Open Access•Clark Spencer Larsen, Margaret J Schoeninger et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 24•References: 30

Measurement of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) in samples of human bone collagen (n = 93) from a temporal series of four prehistoric (early preagricultural, late preagricultural, early agricultural, late agricultural) and two historic (early contact, late contact) periods from the Georgia Bight, a continental embayment on the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast, reveals a general temporal trend for less negative δ 13 C …

Using bone-chemistry data, this project sought to assess the degree of dietary change that occurred among eastern border Pueblo populations due to prehistoric food exchange with hunter-gatherers on the Plains and to the arrival of Spanish colonists. In so doing we introduce a technique for dietary reconstruction that determines the range of diets compatible with bone-chemistry data from a particular population. The data are derived from samples o…
