Conceal and Don’t Feel as Much? Experiential Effects of Expressive Suppression
Emotion regulation research has routinely pitted the antecedent-focused strategy of cognitive reappraisal against the response-focused strategy of expressive suppression. This research has largely yielded that reappraisal is an effective strategy by which to change emotional experience, but implications of expressive suppression are not as clear. This may be due to variations in experimental methodologies, which have not consistently evaluated su…
Rapid methods for multi-level dissemination of neutralizing monoclonal antibody treatment for Covid-19 outpatients
Introduction: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an urgent need for the rapid and equitable translation of knowledge and effective treatments to reach vulnerable populations in response to the ever-shifting pandemic environment. The approval of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for treatment of outpatient COVID-19 resulted in a need to rapidly design dissemination strategies to increase awareness and equitable access for communit…

A Deleuzian reading of Hartshorne’s traditional concept of areal differentiation
Areal differentiation is one of the critical and traditional concepts in geographical studies, reconsidered through the philosophy of Deleuze in the present article. It has been argued that geographical areas should be conceptualised as virtual entities whose source of differentiation rises from their internal force. The paper argues that geographers have access to the virtual entities only in the public words and ideas, tending to naturalise one…
Women live longer than men even during severe famines and epidemics
Significance Women live longer than men in nearly all populations today. Some research focuses on the biological origins of the female advantage; other research stresses the significance of social factors. We studied male–female survival differences in populations of slaves and populations exposed to severe famines and epidemics. We find that even when mortality was very high, women lived longer on average than men. Most of the female advantage w…
Young people, digital media making and critical digital citizenship
A range of recent academic, policy and practice-focused work in the UK and internationally has identified a need for more focused attention on the role of digital literacies in enabling young people to more effectively navigate their way through an increasingly complex, digitally mediated world. In this article, we explore the main debates taking place around the prevalence of digital media in the early twenty-first century, with emphasis on the …
The care/cure dichotomy
A care/cure dichotomy exists between nursing and medicine. Consistent with the nature of most dichotomies, where one part dominates, medicine has emerged as the more valued and prestigious half of the dichotomy. Nursing has steadfastly adhered to the science of caring which, in many ways, impedes the ability to move beyond the dualism of care/cure. This analysis examines the origins and endurance of the care/cure dichotomy in nursing as both exte…

Exploring the relationship between synergy and partnership functioning factors in health promotion partnerships
Intersectoral partnerships have been identified as a useful mechanism for addressing the health challenges that face society. In theory, partnerships achieve synergistic outcomes that amount to more than can be achieved by individual partners working on their own. This study aimed to identify key factors that influence health promotion partnership synergy. Data were collected from 337 partners in 40 health promotion partnerships using a postal su…
Developing a scale to measure trust in health promotion partnerships
Developing and sustaining partnerships for promoting health has been identified as an important strategy for addressing the health challenges that face society. Trust is one of the most important factors that help partnerships function effectively. In health promotion partnerships, trust is an under-researched and poorly understood phenomenon. This study was designed to identify how trust is conceptualized in health promotion partnerships and to …

Despite many safeguards, nurses make the majority of medication administration errors. The purpose of our research was to investigate the perceived causes for such errors and to better understand how nurses deal with them. We performed an interpretive analysis of 158 accounts by nurses who made self-identified medication errors. We found common themes among these accounts. First, although nurses admitted responsibility for errors, they simultaneo…

Health-promoting school development in Zhejiang Province, China
In 2003, after three pilot projects successfully implemented WHO's Health-Promoting Schools (HPS) concept, officials in Zhejiang Province, China, expanded to additional 51 schools (93,000 students and their families and 6800 school personnel). Each school identified a health issue to begin HPS development, followed by conceptual orientation, resource mobilization, teacher training, surveys, interventions, outreach and evaluation. This study focus…
Oman
There are some good books by Western historians about Oman, for example John Peterson's Oman in the 20th Century: Political Foundations of an Emerging State, (London: Croom Helm, 1978), but until now there has been nothing at all in English written from an Arab perspective, and indeed very little even in Arabic. Hussein Ghubash has started to put this deficit right. Oman – the Islamic Democratic Tradition is firmly rooted in Western scholarship, …
Bronze Age Burnt Mounds and Early Medieval Timber Structures at Town Farm Quarry, Burlescombe, Devon
A multi-period site was exposed during topsoil stripping at Town Farm Quarry, Burlescombe, Devon, in 2005. Surviving remains included two Bronze Age burnt mounds with timber-lined troughs and pits, and a collection of well-preserved timber structures associated with a natural spring, constructed in the seventh century AD. A complete leather shoe of the same date was recovered from the fill of a hollowed tree trunk, probably used as a wellhead. A …

An Eighth-Century Pin from Hartlepool

The site lies in the immediate vicinity of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery which contained ‘inscribed stones’ and which is believed to belong to the Anglo-Saxon monastery of the seventh to eighth centuries A.D. Human exposure to rabies from pet wild raccoons in South Carolina and West Virginia, 1987 through 1988
During 1987 and 1988, exposures to eight pet wild raccoons in South Carolina and West Virginia resulted in administration of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis to 19 children and 26 adults. All eight raccoons appeared normal at the time of capture, and three had no signs of illness when sacrificed. The direct medical cost resulting from these exposures was $23,714 ($527 per person). Regulations and public education may help decrease this type of ra…
