  • Older Lesbians

Paige Averett, Intae Yoon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2011

Older lesbians are, at minimum, a triple threat of marginalization due to ageism, heterosexism, and sexism. A national survey specific to this often-invisible population has not occurred in over 25 years. The present study was completed to reveal the needs, strengths, and experiences of the current cohort of older lesbians. Four hundred fifty-six older lesbians responded to an online survey on topics including sociodemographics, social activity, …

  • Care Arrangement Choices for Older Widows

    Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2003

This research examines how a wide range of care arrangement decisions for frail older women are made. Interviews were conducted with 11 older women (ten of whom are widows), nine of their family members, and six professional service providers. Maintaining the older woman's independence was identified as a major theme. While all decision participants identified it as an explicit or implicit decision-making goal, their meanings of independence were…

  • Care Arrangement Decisions for Frail Older Women

    Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2000

This study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate how a range of care arrangement decisions for frail older unmarried women are made. Quantitative data from the 1989 National Long-Term Care Survey provides information concerning factors that predict the probability of five categories of care arrangements, including self only care, nursing home care, informal only care, formal only care, and a mix of formal and informal care…

  • Women, Work, and Caregiving

    Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•1997

Families provide the bulk of care to the increasing numbers of community dwelling older individuals needing assistance due to functional disabilities. Women, due to traditionally accepted familial and societal roles, often bear a disproportionate share of the responsibility for this caregiving. Data from the 1988 National Survey of Families and Households is used to provide descriptive statistics about women who concurrently fill the roles of hom…

  • Attenuation of nursing-related ovarian suppression and high fertility in well-nourished, intensively breast-feeding Amele women of lowland Papua New Guinea

    Open Access•Carol M Worthman, Carol L Jenkins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1993

Intense, sustained nursing lengthens inter-birth intervals and is causally linked with low natural fertility. However, in traditional settings, the effects of such nursing on fertility are difficult to disentangle from those of nutrition. Results from an prospective, direct observational study of reproductive function in well-nourished Amele women who nurse intensively and persistently but who also have high fertility are here presented. Endocrin…

  • Cultural aspects of early childhood growth and nutrition among the Amele of lowland Papua new guinea

Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1984

Childhood malnutrition in Papua New Guinea has often been attributed to inadequate practices. Combining the methods of ethnography and nutrition, this study assesses the impact of beliefs and practices concerning breast feeding and supplementation on infant and toddler growth among the Amele of lowland Madang Province. Results indicate a clear role for notions about lactation and the proper timing of appropriate foods in growth retardation of you…

  • Ritual and Resource Flow

    Open Access•Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•1983•Cited by: 8•References: 13

The dugu, a complex ancestral feast of the Garifuna (Black Carib) of Belize, is discussed in light of contemporary resource stress. Evidence of malnutrition, declining subsistence activities, and migration lends credence to the argument, presented in this paper, that the increased size and frequency of dugu cermonies provides a strategy for resource redistribution between wealthier migrants and their poorer kin. Simultaneously, the threat of cult…

  • Patterns of growth and malnutrition among preschoolers in Belize

    Open Access•Carol L Jenkins, Carol Jenkins•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1981•Cited by: 9•References: 24

An anthropometric survey of 750 preschoolers was conducted during 1979 in Belize to assess nutritional status in two districts, one coastal and the other inland. Mothers were interviewed concerning reproductive history, child's health and dietary history, and associated factors. Analysis included the recognition of low arm circumference, weight‐for‐age, stature‐for‐age, and weight‐for‐stature. Survey results indicate that about 25% of the childre…
