An inferior technician'? African American signallers in the First World War
In the literature on the struggles of African Americans during the First World War, there has been a failure to examine the experiences of the 325th Field Signal Battalion, the first Black signal unit in the U.S. Army. Drawing upon a range of archival sources, unpublished letters, official documents and newspapers, this article assesses the experiences of the battalion's Black officers and men before, during and after the war, arguing that they d…
The American Expeditionary Forces, Communications and the First World War
By adopting an inter-organisational learning model to the case study of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Signal Corps during the First World War, this article seeks to position the neglected subject of inter-allied learning within the broader context of the contentious debates surrounding the AEF’s training and military operations. Employing American, British, and French sources, the article examines the experiences of the AEF Signal Corps…
Civilian Specialists at War
There is a well-known military adage, sometimes attributed to the Second World War US Army commander General Omar Bradley, that while ‘amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics’. When it comes to the First World War, however, in contrast to the widespread fascination and, above all, controversy associated with tactics and operations, the subject of military logistics, supplies and transportation has not generated the same amount of deta…
The British army, information management and the First World War revolution in military affairs
Information Management (IM) – the systematic ordering, processing and channelling of information within organisations – forms a critical component of modern military command and control systems. As a subject of scholarly enquiry, however, the history of military IM has been relatively poorly served. Employing new and under-utilised archival sources, this article takes the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) of the First World War as its case study …
The British Army and Wireless Communication, 1896–1918
The First World War is often identified as a great industrial and technological struggle. However, in the course of explaining the Allied victory in 1918, scholarly opinion is divided over the extent to which the British army made the most effective use of the technology available to it. While much of the debate has centred on the more ‘lethal’ technologies, such as aeroplanes, tanks, and poison gas, very little analysis has been made of the inte…
Effects of cultural themes in psychotic symptoms on the diagnosis of schizophrenia in African Americans
Cultural themes focusing on race-related issues and religiosity were identified via content analysis in the delusions and hallucinations of a sample of 118 African American psychiatric patients. The purpose of the study was to determine whether cultural themes in psychotic symptoms influence the diagnosis from different sources (i.e., chart, SCID, and best estimate) of schizophrenia for Black patients. It was hypothesized that the best estimate d…

The Cultural/Racial Dimension of Psychotic Disorders in African American Patients
Studies of race differences in psychotic disorders frequently show greater severity among African Americans. An intraracial or cultural analysis of psychotic symptoms was conducted to better understand the racial disparities. Specifically, cultural/racial themes in the delusions and hallucinations of a sample of 156 African American psychiatric patients were examined via content analysis. Cultural/racial themes focusing on general racial issues a…
Mental Health in a Remote Community
A total of 118 persons, 44 male and 74 female, from a Northern Ontario community with a local psychiatric hospital were administered a community mental health attitude scale. The groups were relatives of discharged and current psychiatric patients, citizens with no psychiatric relatives, mental health professionals, and psychiatric patients. Significant differences were noted for educational level, age, and community mental health ideology. Analy…
