Free language! Why we should promote de-Englishization, transdisciplinary linguistic tolerance and greater stylistic freedom, and why we should do so in international business particularly
Purpose This study aims to stimulate a dialogue regarding the boring and voiceless language that is supposed to be used across the social sciences, including International Business (IB). Design/methodology/approach This is an essay arguing in favor of changing language use. Findings Freeing thought requires freeing language. Moreover, given the intrinsic multilingual character of IB, this is a particularly pressing issue in IB. Originality/value …
Getting off to a good start
Prior studies show that access to academic knowledge plays a crucial role in new venture financing. We extend this research by shifting the focus from the access to academic knowledge to the developmental state of the academic field, where the academic knowledge is generated. Using natural language processing (NLP), we clustered peer-reviewed academic knowledge from Scopus into various fields. We then analyzed a sample of 341 new biotech ventures…
The promise of potential
We analyze 11 years of admission decisions to a highly selective post‐graduate visual arts program. Our unique, longitudinal data includes detailed information about the selection procedures as well as the later artistic and economic achievements for both accepted and rejected applicants (n = 8,557). Regarding the predictive value of the selection procedures on later performance, our analyses show that the largest gain made is in the first, more …
Betwixt and between
Project-based organizations in the film industry usually have a dual-leadership structure, based on a division of tasks between the dual leaders – the director and the producer – in which the former is predominantly responsible for the artistic and the latter for the commercial aspects of the film. These organizations also have a role hierarchically below and between the dual leaders: the 1st assistant director. This organizational constellation …

Latent organizations in the film industry
The main aim of this article is to study the extent to which the project-based organization (PBO) and the latent organization determine the actual behavior of actors in a project-based industry and how this is mediated by the types of contracts and rewarding practices these organizational forms allow. Labor contracts connected to the PBO are mostly transactional in nature, while the members of the latent organization are linked by relational cont…
Human Bodies in Chinese and European Painting
The relative status of human bodies as subjects for paintings is very different in European painting since the Renaissance and in Chinese painting from the Yuan dynasty onwards. In Europe the body, and especially the nude body, was a necessary ingredient of the most highly valued type of painting, history painting. Landscape painting had a much lower status and value. In China, the hierarchy of subjects is almost completely the reverse. It is pro…
Art and Appropriability in Renaissance Italy and The Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century
The Accademia Del Disegno and the Art Industry
During the Italian renaissance the art industry underwent a major change. Although it seems, in hindsight, to rank among the technically and organizationally most progressive industries, it failed to develop further in this direction and increasingly defined itself as being intrinsically different from other industries. This paper attempts to show how this change can be described in terms of a change of selection systems dominating the domain, fr…
