Hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 treatment: An analysis of Brazil’s far-right media
This article examines how Brazilian far-right media framed hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as part of a COVID-19 preventive protocol, referred to as “early treatment.” Brazilian partisan outlets extensively endorsed HCQ’s scientific soundness, helping to legitimize Bolsonaro’s pandemic response. By pushing HCQ, the Brazilian Federal Government downplayed social distancing, aligning itself with herd immunity strategies. A Correspondence Factorial Analysi…

Covid-19 in Brazil: Political controversies over social isolation measures to control the pandemic. A science vs. antiscience dispute
The Covid-19 pandemic has narrowed the relationship between scientists and leaders around the world, with challenging decisions shared by both areas. Social isolation measures in Brazil as a way to control Sars-CoV-2 cases were involved in an intense political debate. Our aim in this article is to establish whether this dispute can be perceived as a science vs. antiscience controversy. In order to do so, we used criteria based on the Social Studi…
Socio-technical imaginaries of a circular economy in governmental discourse and among science, technology, and innovation actors: A Norwegian case study
A growing body of research is investigating the connections between the discursive construction of circular economy (CE) and its influences on public policies that promote the socio-technological transition towards circular production and consumption systems. However, surprisingly little attention has focused on how CE discourses interact with science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) actors. To address this gap, this research adopts the prism o…
Brazil at COP26: Political and Scientific Disputes Under a Post-Truth Government
Global climate negotiations were again in the spotlight at Glasgow’s COP26 meeting in November 2021, drawing attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and to the need to find long term solutions. While Brazil has been a protagonist of such negotiations for decades, since 2019 the country has abdicated its leadership role, adopting a reactive stance to the environmental agenda. This shift is illustrative of the centrality of scientific disput…
Multiplicity and ontological instability in nonhuman hearts
This paper reflects on the relationship between biological bodies and technological artifacts, based on ethnographic research on the development of circulatory assist technologies, known as artificial hearts. To understand the embodiment that such mechanical devices help to produce, we aim to characterize two types of bodies enacted from medical practices and biotechnologies designed for patients with advanced heart failure. The immunological bod…

On irresponsibility in times of crisis: Learning from the response to the Zika virus outbreak
This perspective paper offers some first thoughts regarding the current Zika virus outbreak and the immediate response it generated in health and research policy. We suggest that in times of emergent health crises, irresponsibilities may arise in the way responses which involve science and technology are framed and implemented. These pertain both to how such situations emerge under a crisis frame, and to pre-existing irresponsibilities which cond…

Communicating through vulnerability: Knowledge politics, inclusion and responsiveness in responsible research and innovation
Responsible research and innovation (RRI) has affirmed the value of ‘inclusion’ and ‘responsiveness’ as institutional virtues necessary to ensure that reflexivity towards the social priorities behind innovation processes is made possible. It is argued that this affirmation links RRI to knowledge politics in other domains (e.g. environmental justice and the politics of development). It is suggested that lessons regarding inclusion and responsivene…

Zé do Caixão: Humano, demasiado humano
