    As an ethnonym, Macedonian refers to speakers of Modern Macedonian, a Slavic language most closely related to Bulgarian and Bosnian/ Croatian/ Serbian/ Montenegrin. The Ancient Macedonians, whose name was made famous by Alexander the Great, spoke a different Indo‐European language, one which died out in the fourth century bce . Owing to the paucity of evidence, the exact affiliation of Ancient Macedonian is uncertain.
