War and the Politics of Denial
In this article, we propose a critical criminology of war that is informed by Stanley Cohen’s notion of states of denial and his portrayal of Israel as a “special case” in this respect. After a general introduction into the development of the criminology of war, we focus on two analytical lines, namely (1) the notion that a culture of denial is indispensable in the legitimation of war and war crimes and (2) that postcolonial thinking can explain …
The Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Social and Political Movements
Australian Aboriginal peoples' movements have been central to Aboriginal resistances to dispossessions and discriminations since European colonization began at the turn of the nineteenth century and continue into present times. Aboriginal organized protest has coalesced around three political and social criteria: the articulation of a direct claim; the organization of activities involving Aboriginal community members around this claim; and the ad…

In Search of Criminology’s Epistemological Threshold
The Road to Dystopia? Changes in the Penal Climate of the Netherlands
Postwar developments in Dutch penal policy encompass one period of sustained reduction in the scale of imprisonment (1947–74), producing the most humane penal system in Europe, followed by a second (1975 to date) in which that trend reversed, producing an imprisonment rate that exceeds the European average, with adverse consequences for the character of prison regimes. The causes of the initial period are not self‐evident, taking place while crim…
Abolitionism
When social scientists use the word abolitionism they mostly refer to the criminological perspective that dismisses penal definitions and punitive responses to criminalized problems, and that proposes their replacement by dispute‐settlement, redress, and social justice. In more general, historical terms it refers to the abolition of state (supported) institutions that are no longer felt to be legitimate. There have been abolitionist movements aga…
Public safety and the management of fear
In the international criminological literature the Netherlands is generally characterized as a tolerant, liberal country: permissive towards many vices, foreigner-friendly and blessed with a mild penal climate. Today this image is about as worn out as the odd postcard image of the Netherlands as the country of clogs, windmills and tulips. With this alleged tolerant past portrayed as a mistake, the Netherlands has over the last few years turned in…
Reclaiming Critical Criminology
This article seeks to examine the relevance of the continental European tradition in critical criminology for the theoretical elaboration of criminological theory today. The first step towards an answer is a rather descriptive one: how did critical criminology develop historically on the European continent? That is the theme of the first section. In the second section, the social and cultural developments which accompanied the heyday of critical …

Vingt ans de « Déviance et Société » sous l'angle de la criminologie critique
This article places the history of Déviance et Société in the context of the simultaneous development of critical criminology in Europe. The reasons given for the establishment of the journal, the need to explicitly cover studies of deviance and institutionalised control in a social perspective, resembles those reasons for which the critical perspective has emerged. In the first years volumes, critical criminology received a clear place next to m…
From Punishment to Diversion and Back Again
Post‐war Dutch penitentiary policy has been characterised by the principle of rehabilitation. In the 1980s, the optimism of reaching this ideal by ‘improving’ prison conditions has been tuned down. Sanctions which are executed ‘closer to the community’, as it is currently called, are now considered to have a greater rehabilitative potential. Many of these so‐called ‘alternative sanctions’ currently function in a model of diversion from the penal …
