The Setting of the Null Subject Parameters across (Non-)Null-Subject Languages
This article explores a learning model for acquiring a variety of null and non-null-subject languages (i.e., consistent, partial, semi and non-null-subject languages). This model builds upon a version of the Null Subject Parameter(s) based on the "Borer-Chomsky Conjecture" (BCC), which assumes that the presence or absence of a D(definiteness)-feature in different functional heads, together with EPP (Extended projection principle) related features…
A Survey on Generic Impersonal Structures in Brazilian Portuguese
This article presents a survey on null generic impersonal structures conducted with native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The objective of the survey was (i) to investigate whether null impersonal constructions with the generic reading need to have elements such as fronted adverbials to check the EPP, a hypothesis put forward by Holmberg (2005, 2010a,b); (ii) verify to what extent BP-speakers require an overt marker of genericity (e.g., th…
Subject ellipsis in early child English
English-speaking children are known to omit subjects. Parametric analyses of the phenomenon have the advantage to give a simple answer to why children omit subjects and how they reach an adult grammar: the problem is reduced to a matter of parameter misseting and resetting. However, early parametric analyses of missing subjects were challenged by empirical findings. In this paper, I present a parametric analysis of null subjects in finite clauses…
Testing children's knowledge of generic null pronouns
In this paper, I discuss an experiment conducted with children acquiring Brazilian Portuguese (BP) as their native language. The experiment was designed to test if Brazilian children understand that the null subject in impersonal structures has the generic reading in BP instead of the referential one. The experiment consisted of a Truth-Value Judgement Task (TVJT). The results show that children as young as 4 years of age understand the null subj…
