  • Travelling in time with natural language

    Open Access•Ana Müller, Marta Donazzan•ARTICLE•Gragoatá•2024

This paper investigates the grammatical strategies deployed by natural languages in order to express temporal reference. We show that temporal reference is obtained by combining a finite set of pieces of meaning which are constrained by the metaphysics of natural language (BACH 1986) and which languages distribute differently across functional categories. The paper discusses more specifically temporal adverbial clauses that express the meanings o…

  • Decomposing distribution across dimensions

Open Access•Marta Donazzan, Luiz Soares Mendes•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•2020•References: 12

This paper focuses on the investigation of the meaning of reduplication in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) analyzing the contribution of each of its forms: repetition (\rep) and alternation (\alt). In order to check their role, we proceeded a data collection with a native signer during elicitation sessions following the methodology for semantic elicitation (Matthewson, 2004). We also collected a spontaneous datum with another signer. We show tha…

  • A a Semântica Dos Numerais Distributivos

  • Italian causatives and the grammar of (in)direct causation

    Open Access•Marta Donazzan•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2017

This paper tackles the issue of the relation between syntax and semantics in causative structures, and it concentrates on the empirical case offered by syntactic causative constructions in Italian. Italian exhibit two types of causative constructions (so-called faire-par and faire-infinitive constructions) that have been the subject of extensive inquiry in the literature. I argue that, in order to capture the semantic similarities and differences…

  • Weak (In)definites, Familiarity and Reference to Kinds
