  • Romito 9

Open Access•F Martini, Domenico Lo Vetro et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 62

During recent excavations at Grotta del Romito (Papasidero, northern Calabria, Italy), a new Upper Palaeolithic burial—designated Romito 9—was identified. The burial pit had been partially disturbed ab antiquo, resulting in an altered depositional context. The burial pertains to a female individual, approximately 11–12 years of age, and is associated with an archaeological layer dated to 16,129 ± 100 uncal BP (19,809–19,157 cal BP, 2σ), correspon…

Human osteological remains from Late Neolithic and Copper Age sites in the province of Bergamo were examined and reviewed. These derive from caves in the municipalities of Zogno (Buca del Tabàc, Grotta Pussù, Buca del Paier), Entratico (Buca del Corno) and from rock shelters in the municipality of Castione della Presolana (Val Merci - Prat de la Furca). A picture of funerary rites diversified into secondary caves deposition, with high minimum num…

  • Chert exploitation and circulation in eastern Lombardy (Northern Italy)

Open Access•Stefano Bertola, Domenico Lo Vetro et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2021

This work focuses on the Eastern Lombardy Prealps (central Southern Alps), including the Brescia and Bergamo provinces. Knappable lithic raw materials are represented by cherts and radiolarites which are quite common in the Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary series. Tectonics played an important role for the preservation of good chert outcrops. Several prehistoric sites are located not far away from the primary lithic sources; in particular we have …

Grotta d’Oriente, on the island of Favignana (NW Sicily, Italy), preserves evidence of the human exploitation of marine resources dating back to the early Holocene (Mesolithic and Mesolithic-Neolithic transition), at the time of dramatic coastal changes in the area during the isolation of Favignana from Sicily. Mesolithic and Meso-Neolithic deposits contained abundant intertidal mollusc remains, offering the opportunity to explore potential effec…
