  • Local people’s interpretations of the hominin footprints at Laetoli, Tanzania

Elgidius B Ichumbaki, Marco Cherin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Archaeology…•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 5

In 1976 and 2014, scientists reported hominin footprints in Pliocene volcanic deposits at Laetoli, north-eastern Tanzania. They hypothesized that the footprints belong to the extinct hominin species Australopithecus afarensis. Not only have the footprints shaped scientists’ understanding of human biological evolution, but they have also placed Laetoli and Tanzania on the world’s paleoanthropological studies map. However, there have been different…

    Open Access•F T Masao•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Archaeology…•2017

Following the desire by Kabanga Nickel Company Ltd. to develop nickel mining in Ngara District, north-western Tanzania, the Kabanga Nickel Project (KNP) commissioned assessment and retrieval of cultural heritage, i.e. (property and sites having archaeological, paleontological, historical, cultural, artistic or religious value) followed by mitigation measures as required by both the Government of Tanzania and the International Finance Corporation.…

  • Oh 83: A new early modern human fossil cranium from the Ndutu beds of Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania

    Open Access•Whitney B Reiner, F T Masao et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 88

There have been numerous attempts to use cranial anatomy to define the species Homo sapiens and identify it in the fossil record. These efforts have not met wide agreement by the scientific community due, in part, to the mosaic patterns of cranial variation represented by the fossils. The variable, mosaic pattern of trait expression in the crania of Middle and Late Pleistocene fossils implies that morphological modernity did not occur at once. Ho…

    Open Access•F T Masao•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Unlike Peninj and Monik localities in western Lake Natron, eastern Lake Natron remains an archaeological terra incognita. A brief survey of the landforms adjacent to the eastern shoreline revealed 28 Stone Age archaeological sites exhibiting technological and typological features suggestive of the Acheulean Sangoan, Middle Stone Age (MSA), and Later Stone Age (LSA) distributed in three different landforms. While the majority of the assemblages we…

  • Late Pliocene Homo and Hominid Land Use from Western Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania

    Open Access•Robert J Blumenschine, Charles R Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2003

Excavation in the previously little-explored western portion of Olduvai Gorge indicates that hominid land use of the eastern paleobasin extended at least episodically to the west. Finds included a dentally complete Homo maxilla (OH 65) with lower face, Oldowan stone artifacts, and butchery-marked bones dated to be between 1.84 and 1.79 million years old. The hominid shows strong affinities to the KNM ER 1470 cranium from Kenya ( Homo rudolfensis …

    1. A wealth of vernacular architecture balanced by exemely scarce financial resources – this paradox has plagued the United Republic of Tanzania's Village Museum since its creation a quarter of a century ago. There is now, however, some cause for optimism, as this article shows. Its author, who holds degrees in anthropology and archaeology, is the former Director of the country's National Museums.Notes1.
