  • Employment imbalances in EU regions

    Open Access•Ariel Luis Wirkierman, Tommaso Ciarli et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We analyse the role of technological dependence and interregional trade centrality in explaining a region’s employment performance. We first identify the core–periphery technological structure of European Union (EU) regions, clustering them based on their high-tech trade relations (trade blocks) and technological and economic indicators (place-based regional groups). We show that EU regions have a fractal structure: blocks at the core and periphe…

  • A taxonomy of European innovation clubs

Open Access•Ariel Luis Wirkierman, Tommaso Ciarli et al.•ARTICLE•Economia Politica•2023•References: 7

The paper provides a novel, empirically grounded map of innovation ‘clubs’ in the EU, based on a unique analysis of micro-aggregated, country-level data. Using exploratory factor analysis we articulate innovation variables in a taxonomy of four ‘latent’ innovation theories: Network-Innovation-System , Kaldorian , New-Growth-Theory , and Schumpeterian . We then characterise clusters of countries (‘clubs’), based on their performance against this t…

  • Revisiting the Natural Resource Curse

    Open Access•Maria Savona, Filippo Bontadini•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2023•References: 51

This article revisits and empirically tests the conjecture that specialization in natural resource industries (NRI) might not necessarily be a 'curse' for developing countries if it generates opportunities for export diversification in backward-linked sectors à la Hirschman. The article systematizes the evolution of the debate around the NRI 'curse'. Then it empirically tests whether NRI might represent a sufficient 'domestic representative deman…

  • A “new normal” as a “new essential”? Covid-19, digital transformations and employment structures

    Maria Savona•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2021

This paper explores the new policy challenges that have emerged as a result of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The “new normal” should acknowledge the “new essential” in terms of jobs and sectors. First, the paper examines the trade-off between health policies and anti-recessionary policies. It studies the economic impact of lockdown on households and firms and, relatedly, the slowdown in global value chain-related trade. It the exam…

  • Services in Developing Economies

Open Access•Gisela Di Meglio, Jorge Gallego et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2018•References: 55

This study contributes to the debate on the premature deindustrialization of developing countries by analysing the contribution of services to aggregate productivity and output growth within a Kaldorian framework. The article revisits Kaldor's Growth Laws and empirically tests them for a number of economic activities, including four service branches across 29 developing economies in Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa over three decades (1…

  • The determinants of regional specialisation in business services

Valentina Meliciani, Maria Savona•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 12

The article accounts for the determinants of sectoral specialisation in business services (BS) across the EU-27 regions as determined by: (i) agglomeration economies (ii) the region-specific structure of intermediate linkages (iii) technological innovation and knowledge intensity and (iv) the presence of these factors in neighbouring regions. The empirical analysis draws upon the REGIO panel database over the period 1999–2003. By estimating a Spa…
