  • Effectiveness of self-care interventions for integrated morbidity management of skin neglected tropical diseases in Anambra State, Nigeria

Open Access•Chinwe Eze, Chinwe C Eze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

    ISRCTN Registry: ISRCTN20317241 ; 27/08/2021, Retrospectively registered

  • Understanding the Southern African 'Anomaly

    Open Access•L Sawers, Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 91

The epicentre of the global HIV epidemic is southern Africa. Previous explanations point to migration patterns and highly skewed income distribution, both thought to promote risky sexual behaviour. This study emphasizes the importance of common infectious and parasitic diseases that increase the likelihood of HIV transmission by increasing contagiousness and vulnerability to infection. Using multiple regression analysis on country-level data, the…

  • Cofactor infections and HIV epidemics in developing countries

    L Sawers, Eileen Stillwaggon et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2008

This article shows that the burden of certain tropical disease infections, after controlling for other factors, is positively correlated with HIV prevalence. Using cross-national data and multivariate linear regression analysis, we investigate the determinants of HIV prevalence in low- and middle-income countries. We begin with social and economic variables used in other cross-national studies and then incorporate data on parasitic and infectious…

  • Race, Sex, and the Neglected Risks for Women and Girls in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Global AIDS policy has failed to stop the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa because prevention programs are limited by an unscientific theory of disease causation, which assumes that differences in HIV prevalence among populations are adequately explained by variation in rates of unsafe sexual behaviors. But differences in sexual behavior cannot explain 250-fold differences in HIV prevalence among countries and increasing divergence in incidenc…

  • Aids and the Ecology of Poverty

    Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2006

  • Racial Metaphors

    Open Access•Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2003•Cited by: 22•References: 27

Western preconceptions regarding African sexuality distorted early research on the social context of AIDS in Africa and limited the scope of preventive policies. Key works cited repeatedly in the social science and policy literature constructed a hypersexualized pan-African culture as the main reason for the high prevalence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. Africans were portrayed as the social 'Other' in works marked by sweeping generalizations and …

  • HIV/Aids in Africa

Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2002

An interdisciplinary approach that incorporates biomedical data into an economic analysis provides the necessary foundation for HIV/AIDS policy in poor countries. This article examines the biomedical effects of economic conditions in Africa that contribute to high rates of HIV transmission. The results of statistical analysis show the correlation of economic and epidemiological variables (nutrition, distribution of income, and urbanisation) with …

  • Stunted Lives, Stagnant Economies

    J William Gibson, Eileen Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•2000

  • Anti‐Indian Agitation and Economic Interests

    Open Access•Eileen Stillwaggon, Eileen M Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Antipode•1984

  • Anti-Indian Agitation and Economic Interests

    Eileen Stillwaggon, Eileen M Stillwaggon•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1981•Cited by: 1

Throughout the United States in recent years there has been a resurgence of racist activity in many forms. In states with significant Indian populations and landholdings or land claims Indians have been the target of well-financed campaigns of propagandizing and lobbying. In 26 states organizations have been formed to work at the state and national levels against Indian rights. The state groups, such as Montanans Opposed to Discrimination, organi…
