  • Capitalism Without Capital” or “Technofeudalism”? Preliminary Thoughts Toward a Theory of Knowledge Monopolization

    Open Access•Özgür Orhangazi•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2025•References: 3

This article engages with the arguments that the rise of intangible assets, digital platforms, and knowledge monopolies represents either a fundamental transformation of capitalism or the emergence of “technofeudalism.” Drawing from Marxian economic theory, I propose a conceptual framework based on three appearances of knowledge in the economy: commodity, capital, and barriers to entry. Knowledge commodities challenge traditional Marxian value th…

  • The Intellectual Odyssey of James R. Crotty

Open Access•Özgür Orhangazi, Gary Dymski•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2023

We summarize the intellectual journey of James R. Crotty in this tribute. We discuss how Crotty’s approach to macroeconomics based on Marxian and Keynesian insights led to a series of flexible models based on realistic assumptions that help us better understand the contradictory evolution of capitalism from the 1970s to the 2010s. The basic building blocks of Crottyian macroeconomics consist of the emphasis on macro foundations, focus on the conc…

  • Turkey in Turbulence

    Open Access•Özgür Orhangazi, A Erinç Yeldan•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2023•References: 24

While global monetary tightening by central banks, led by the US Federal Reserve, has heightened concerns about a slowdown in the world's economy and an increased likelihood of debt crises across developing countries, Turkey has attracted attention for doing the opposite. Indeed, the country's economic policy makers have intensified monetary easing towards credit expansion at the risk of increased exchange rate instability. This article analyses …

  • The Re-making of the Turkish Crisis

    Open Access•Özgür Orhangazi, A Erinç Yeldan•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2021•Cited by: 17•References: 36

By the end of 2018 Turkey had entered a new economic crisis and a lengthy recession period. In contrast to the previous financial crises of 1994, 2001 and 2009, when the economy shrank abruptly with a spectacular collapse of asset values and a severe contraction of output, the 2018 economic crisis was characterized by a prolonged recession with persistent low (negative) rates of growth, dwindling investment performance, debt repayment problems, s…

  • Financialisation and capital accumulation in the non-financial corporate sector

    Özgür Orhangazi•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2008

I discuss the impact of financialisation on real capital accumulation in the US. Using data from a sample of non-financial corporations from 1973 to 2003, I find a negative relationship between real investment and financialisation. Two channels can help explain this negative relationship: first, increased financial investment and increased financial profit opportunities may have crowded out real investment by changing the incentives of firm manag…

  • Wall Street vs. The Labor Movement

  • The 2000–2001 Financial Crisis in Turkey

Mathieu Dufour, Özgür Orhangazi•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In this paper, we study the consequences of the 2000-2001 financial crisis in Turkey to identify the impacts of the crisis on capital and labor. We uncover three significant empirical effects of this crisis. First, international capital benefited from the crisis by both increasing its total assets in Turkey and income flows from these assets, while large domestic financial capitalists also increased their profits in the aftermath of the crisis. S…
