  • Correlates of Rapid Repeat Pregnancy Among Adolescents and Young Women in Uganda

Burke Burke, Holly M Burke et al.•ARTICLE•International Perspectives on…•2018

CONTEXT: Short pregnancy intervals can contribute to maternal and child morbidity and mortality. No previous research has explored factors associated with short pregnancy intervals among young women in Uganda, where adolescent pregnancy and short birth intervals are common. METHODS: Data on 626 married or cohabiting women aged 15-22 with one or two previous pregnancies were drawn from the 2011 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey. Bivariate and m…

  • Does mhGAP training of primary health care providers improve the identification of child- and adolescent mental, neurological or substance use disorders? Results from a randomized controlled trial in …

Open Access•Angela Akol, Frederick Makumbi et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2018

In this setting, mhGAP CAMH training of PHC providers increases PHC clinics' identification and reporting of non-epilepsy CAMH cases but this increase did not reach statistical significance

  • Expanding HIV testing and counselling into communities

    Open Access•Aurélie Brunie, Patricia Wamala-Mucheri et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Improving HIV testing and counselling (HTC) requires a range of strategies. This article reports on HTC service delivery by Village Health Teams (VHTs) in Uganda in the context of a model integrating this new component into pre-existing family planning services. Eight health centres from matched pairs were randomly allocated to intervention or control. After being trained, 36 VHTs reporting to selected facilities in the intervention group started…

  • On the road again

Elizabeth C Costenbader, Kathryn E Lancaster et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2015

Long-distance truck drivers have been shown to be a critical population in the spread of HIV in Africa. In 2009, surveys with 385 Ugandan long-distance truck drivers measured concurrency point prevalence with two methods; it ranged from 37.4% (calendar-method) to 50.1% (direct question). The majority (84%) of relationships reported were long-term resulting in a long duration of overlap (average of 58 months) across concurrent partnerships. Only 7…

  • Informing the future of capacity building

Tricia Petruney, Aurélie Brunie et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2014•References: 8

Despite a recent surge in popularity, critical gaps remain in effectively building the capacity of organisations through global development projects. Two non-governmental organisations, FHI 360 and Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), established a partnership focused on strengthening CTPH's organisational capacity to conduct high quality monitoring and evaluation and to effectively advocate for integrated population, health, and environmen…

  • Community-Based Distribution of Injectable Contraceptives

Theresa Hoke, Aurélie Brunie et al.•ARTICLE•International Perspectives on…•2012

Improving access to family planning services and expanding method choice are two fundamental proven strategies for increasing contraceptive prevalence in resource-poor settings.[1-4] Community-based family planning programs are designed to improve access by bringing services to hard-to-reach communities.[56] Such services are typically delivered by community health workers who are trained in family planning but lack formal clinical credentials. W…

  • Acceptability of male circumcision for prevention of HIV infection among men and women in Uganda

Lisa Albert, Lisa M Albert et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2011

In the last decade, three randomized controlled trials in Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda have shown that medical male circumcision (MMC) reduces the sexual transmission of HIV from women to men. Objectives of this assessment were to measure acceptability of adult MMC and circumcision of children to inform policies regarding whether and how to promote MMC as an HIV prevention strategy. This mixed-method study, conducted across four Ugandan distri…

  • Scaling Up Community Provision of Injectables through the Public Sector in Uganda

Open Access•Kirsten Krueger, Angela Akol et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This case study presents service monitoring data and programmatic lessons from scaling up Uganda's community‐based distribution of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA, marketed as Depo‐Provera) to the public sector in two districts. We describe the process and identify implementation opportunities and challenges, including modifications to the service model. Analysis of monitoring data indicates that the number of women initiating DMPA with a…
