Gender gaps in potato productivity and the role of information and communication platforms in Kenya
The gender productivity gap in the agricultural sector is a major contributor to low productivity in sub-Saharan Africa. Literature suggests that women’s lower productivity is deeply rooted in structural disadvantages, whose policy solutions include the potential use of information and communication technology (ICT) to incrementally narrow gender productivity gaps. This study assessed the contribution of ICT platforms to the gender gap in potato …

Policy framing and crisis narratives around food safety in Vietnam
While progress has been made recently in understanding food systems per se, much less is known about policies around those food systems. In this paper, we aim at understanding the food system policy context with the specific objective to look at policy dynamics-defined as the way policy agendas are identified, justified, and framed by decision-makers, and how they interact. Vietnam is used as a case study. Primary data were generated through face…

Women bargaining with patriarchy in coastal Kenya
Gender analysts have long recognised that challenging existing patriarchal structures involves risks for women, who may lose both long-term support and protection from kin. However, understanding the specific ways in which they ‘bargain with patriarchy’ in particular contexts is relatively poorly understood. We focus on a Mijikenda fishing community in coastal Kenya to explore contradictions in gendered power relations and how women deploy these …
Adapting to a new urbanizing environment
Drawing upon examples of street vendors in Hanoi, this study explores gendered strategies to adapt to rapid urbanization, and how street vendors’ responses, in turn, shape the current informal food systems. The findings show that Hanoi’s informal food system is organized based on social, as well as economic, interactions and therefore the system’s power hierarchy and gender relations are different from those of formal systems, while providing liv…
Bringing analysis of gender and social–ecological resilience together in small-scale fisheries research
The demand for gender analysis is now increasingly orthodox in natural resource programming, including that for small-scale fisheries. Whilst the analysis of social-ecological resilience has made valuable contributions to integrating social dimensions into research and policy-making on natural resource management, it has so far demonstrated limited success in effectively integrating considerations of gender equity. This paper reviews the challeng…
