  • Some Questions Regarding Avicenna's Theory of the Temporal Origination of the Human Rational Soul

    Open Access•Michael E Marmura•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2008

In Avicenna's expositions of his theory of the temporal origination of the human rational soul, its ḥudūth , one meets difficulties in understanding of what he actually means. Some of the expressions used are left unexplained and one has to extract their meaning from discussions given in a different context. There are also ambiguities in his use of such terms as al-‘aql al-kulliyy (the universal intellect) and al-nafs al-kulliyya (the universal s…

  • Ghazali and Ash'arism Revisited

    Open Access•Michael E Marmura•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2002

At the basis of Ghazali's criticisms of Ash'arite kalām is the thesis that its primary function is the defence of traditional Islamic belief, the 'aqida , against the distortions of heretical innovations ( al-bida' ). Kalām is not an end in itself and it is error to think that the mere engagement in it constitutes the experientially religious. In the I[hdotu]yā' he maintains in effect that when it is pursued as an end in itself, its dogmas can co…

  • Ghazali's Chapter on Divine Power in the Iqtiṣād

    Open Access•Michael E Marmura•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•1994

The theological foundations of Ghazali's causal theory are fully expressed in the chapter on the attribute of divine power in his al-Iqtiṣād fi al-I'tiqād ( Moderation in Belief ). The basic doctrine which he proclaims and argues for is that divine power, an attribute additional to the divine essence, is one and pervasive. It does not consist of a multiplicity of powers that produce a multiplicity of effects, but is a unitary direct cause of each…

    Michael E Marmura, F W Zimmermann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1983

Al-Farabi of Baghdad (c. 870-950) is the first major representative of the medieval Arabic Aristotelianism which came to influence the Christian West so profoundly. In the Islamic world his writings on logic set the pattern for the future and virtually created Islamic philosophy. He is also important as a witness to the study of Aristotle in late antiquity, demonstrating a knowledge of Galen and the exegetical tradition of Porphyry. Aristotle's t…

mean, however, that the vital question of the existence of revelation is ignored. Thus in the De Anima of the al-Shifd' we find a standard argument, repeated elsewhere in Avicenna's writings, to show that the existence of prophecy is possible.1 But what is significant here is that this argument is for the possibility, not for the actual existence of prophecy. Does Avicenna go beyond this in his psychological writings to show that prophecy is not …
