Herding the flocks, harvesting the coast? The life of islanders at the Early Cycladic site of Dhaskalio (2,750–2,250 BCE)
Same sea, different catches. Exploring ecological variations vs. Human choices in prehistoric Mediterranean: The Aegean case
Archeo-ichthyological and archaeo-malacological studies have increased in the last decades in the Mediterranean and cover almost all periods of Prehistory and Antiquity. Among other regions, the Aegean Sea offers a particularly diversified spatiotemporal panorama of the early Mediterranean History, which highlights the diversity of responses vis-à-vis the marine environment, omnipresent in the Aegean landscape. The rich dataset from this region h…

The death of infants in Early Iron Age Cyprus: A jar burial from Kition-Bamboula
During recent excavations of the French Archaeological Mission at Kition-Bamboula, in modern day Larnaka, Cyprus, an infant jar burial was discovered. It was found under a floor layer in a domestic context, and is dated to the beginning of the Late Cypriot IIIB period (end of the 12th– early 11th century BC). This jar burial is part of a series which seems to be attested, at least in the present state of documentation, only in eastern Cyprus (Enk…
Reconstructing human-environment interactions in the western Messara Plain (Phaistos, Crete, Greece) from the emergence of city states to Byzantine times
Fishing together, fishing on its own: Fish exploitation patterns at the Neolithic Alepotrypa cave (Diros, Greece) and Aegean prehistoric fishing traditions
Various marine animal assemblages from prehistoric contexts across the Mediterranean suggest a focus on the exploitation of marine resources by coastal populations as early as the Mesolithic. Along with the harvesting of nearshore coastal resources (fish and invertebrates), a more organised fishing activity that targeted pelagic species, traditionally considered migratory, is evident in several Mesolithic assemblages. With the advent of the Neoli…
To Salt or Not to Salt: A Review of Evidence for Processed Marine Products and Local Traditions in the Aegean Through Time

Black Fish Bones in Waterlogged Deposits: The Case of the Neolithic Lake Settlement of Dispilio, Greece
The identification of burnt bones in archaeological sites is important as it provides evidence of human-processing activities and fire-related episodes. Past zooarchaeological analyses of burnt fish and mammal bones were mostly based on macroscopic features, such as bone color and structure, and microscopic features, such as crystallinity. Such studies, however, have shown that black coloring of bones can be caused not only by burning, but also b…
Re-investigating fish consumption in Greek antiquity: Results from δ13C and δ15N analysis from fish bone collagen
Report on the excavations in the years 2007 and 2008 southeast of the Temple of Poseidon at Kalaureia
Archaeological material ranging in date from the Early Bronze Age to Late Antiquity was found in 2007 and 2008 in the excavations in Area H to the south and southeast of the Temple of Poseidon. Finds datable to the periods of major change in the Sanctuary—the Late Archaic and the Early Hellenistic—illuminate the character of the change. In the Late Archaic period an attempt to erect a votive column at the site was for some reason given up, and dr…
Journées maliotes Malia, ville et territoire: Organisation des espaces et exploitation des ressources, colloque organisé a l'Ecole française d'Athènes les 2-3 novembre 2007
THE MALIA DAYS The Malia Days, organized by the Ecole française d'Athènes on November 2 and 3, 2007, focused on the organisation of space and the exploitation of resources, themes that allowed uniting the approaches of current work on two different scales, those of agglomeration and urbanism, on the one hand, and of the territorial organisation, on the other. All the contributions are concerned with ongoing research, of recent or forthcoming publ…
