Practical Idealism: On Fernanda Gallo’s Reading of Hegel and Italian Political Thought
Italian receptions of Hegel's political thought analysed in Fernanda Gallo's careful study, can be examined through Fichte's concepts of 'positing' or taking up extrinsic material within a pre-existing conceptual scheme, but in this reciprocal interaction, both elements, receiver and received, are changed. Gallo shows both how Hegel is filtered through Italian philosophical traditions and how Hegel's thought in turn challenges these traditions. W…
Freedom and Perfection: German Political Thought from Leibniz to Marx
Leibniz, this study argues, is the genuine initiator of German Idealism. His analysis of freedom as spontaneity and the relations he establishes among freedom, justice, and progress underlie Kant's ideas of rightful interaction and his critiques of Enlightened absolutism. Freedom and Perfection offers a historical examination of perfectionism, its political implications and transformations in German thought between 1650 and 1850. Douglas Moggach …
Left-Kantian Perfectionism
The historical context of early post-Kantian debates on politics reveals the emergence of a new type of perfectionist ethics no longer based on the state-sponsored promotion of happiness, as the dominant German tendency in the eighteenth century had been, but on individual freedom. Post-Kantian perfectionism focused on maintaining and enhancing the conditions for rightful interaction among self-defining individuals. Rather than isolating and alie…
Italian receptions of Hegel: Epilogue
The reconstruction of national receptions of Hegel, and the inflections of his influence through local traditions and international exchanges, remains a fruitful field of investigation. The Anglophone literature has been relatively neglectful of the specific contributions made by Italian readings of Hegel, from his earliest reception onwards. The collection published here builds toward a fuller understanding of Hegel's diagnosis of the origins an…
The 1848 Revolutions and European Political Thought
The revolutions that swept across Europe in 1848 marked a turning-point in the history of political and social thought. They raised questions of democracy, nationhood, freedom and social cohesion that have remained among the key issues of modern politics, and still help to define the major ideological currents - liberalism, socialism, republicanism, anarchism, conservatism - in which these questions continue to be debated today. This collection o…
Contextualising Fichte: Leibniz, Kant, and Perfectionist Ethics
An examination of the intellectual context in which Fichte develops his ethical program in the Jena period and its immediate aftermath (1794–1800) reveals the determining presence of Leibniz, and the complex heritage of Leibnizian perfectionist thought from which Kantian, and post-Kantian, ethics seek to extricate themselves. While Kant blocks any reversion to the older, Leibnizian perfectionism, his criticisms leave open a space for a new kind o…
Between Leibniz and Kant: The Political Thought of Wilhelm von Humboldt
In his early text, The Limits of State Action, Wilhelm von Humboldt raises the Kantian question of the permissibility and legitimate extent of political and juridical coercion, as his contribution to a debate amongst Kantians launched by the publication in 1785 of Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. In arguing for a minimal state, concerned exclusively with internal and external security of its members but not at all with their felici…
Romantic Political Thought
In assessing the political charge of Romanticism, Georg Lukács castigated it for its irrationalism and proto-fascistic tendencies, while Jacques Barzun stressed its anti-totalitarian character, its promotion of individuality and diversity against imposed uniformity and coercion. More recent critics have produced a complex typology of Romantic political critiques of modernity, from restorationist conservative to utopian socialist. This chapter tak…

Freedom and Perfection: German Debates on the State in the Eighteenth Century
This paper explores eighteenth-century German debates on the relation of freedom and perfection in the course of which Kant works out his juridical theory. It contrasts the perfectionist ideas of political activity in Christian Wolff and Karl von Dalberg (a historically important but neglected figure), with Fichte's program inThe Closed Commercial State(1800), distinguishing logics of political intervention. Examining insufficiently recognized as…
The New Hegelians: Politics and Philosophy in the Hegelian School
The period leading up to the Revolutions of 1848 was a seminal moment in the history of political thought, demarcating the ideological currents and defining the problems of freedom and social cohesion which are among the key issues of modern politics. This 2006 anthology offers research on Hegel's followers in the 1830s and 1840s. With essays by philosophers, political scientists, and historians from Europe and North America, it pays special atte…
The Philosophy and Politics of Bruno Bauer
This is a comprehensive study in English of Bruno Bauer, a leading Hegelian philosopher of the 1840s. Inspired by the philosophy of Hegel, Bauer led an intellectual revolution that influenced Marx and shaped modern secular humanism. In the process he offered a republican alternative to liberalism and socialism, criticized religious and political conservatism and set out the terms for the development of modern mass and industrial society. Based on…
Republican Rigorism: Hegelian Views of Emancipation in 1848
This paper examines whether Bruno Bauer's critical assessment of Jewish emancipation in Prussia is consistent with his other republican writings in the 1840s. It argues that Bauer's political position is a form of republican rigorism, according to which human emancipation requires identification with universal interests, and not the defence of particular identities. Rigorism involves the elimination of internal as well as external heteronomous in…

The Social Question and the Democratic Revolution: Marx and the Legacy of 1848
The revolutionary movements of 1848 viewed the political cataclysm of continental Europe as an explosion of liberty, a new age of freedom and equality. This collection focuses on the relationship between democratic and socialist currents in 1848, seeking to reassess the relevance of these currents to the present era of global economic liberalism
Concepts Of Sovereignty: Historical Reflections on State, Economy and Culture
Forged in the great political struggles which have defined the modern world, and in the cataclysmic processes which have shaped capitalist domestic and international markets, sovereign states are now undergoing enormous deconstructive pressures. Previously submerged by the power of the state, or integrated into a common economic territory, ethnic, nationalist, and regionalist forces are finding new expression, and are undermining many apparently …

Perspectives on the Crisis of Political Thought: Labor and Society
The essays in this issue are a response to an apparent contradiction. How can we explain the disjunction between rapid, spectacular technological and economic change, and the continued reception of ideological patterns derived from nineteenthcentury originals? Has theory been unable to reform itself, let alone to encapsulate and direct the processes of social transformation? Indeed, the repetitive and imitative character of much of contemporary p…

Absolute Spirit and Universal Self-Consciousness: Bruno Bauer's Revolutionary Subjectivism
Recent literature on the Young Hegelians attests to a renewed appreciation of their philosophical and political significance. Important new studies have linked them to the literary and political currents of their time, traced the changing patterns of their relationships with early French socialism, and demonstrated the affinity of their thought with Hellenistic theories of self-consciousness. The conventional interpretative context, which focuses…
Efficiency, Competition, and Full Employment in Canadian Free Trade Literature
With its focus on the single issue of free trade, the federal election of November 1988 deeply divided the Canadian public and generated heated debate on the direction of economic policy. Interpretations of the possible effects of the proposed Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (PTA) became highly-charged political interventions, in which labour, business, and cultural groups actively engaged, and in which a broadly based popular movement was forged.…

Monadic Marxism: A Critique of Elster's Methodological Individualism
Elster's work unstably combines Leibnizian and utilitarian conceptions of action and offers various deconstructions of rationality and individuality. His method ological individualism gives an inadequate account of its privileged object, individual teleologies, and a distorted account of the relational framework of social reproduction and transformation. Elster has not properly conceptualized the relation of the teleological act to patterns of ma…
Nation, volk, masse: Left-Hegelian perspectives on the rise of nationalism
In Left-Hegefian writings of the 184&, a critique of Hegel underlies the assessment of concrete probfems of historical trans~o~ation posed by the French Revolution. The concept of the nation emerges in response to themes developed in Hegel’s ~~~r~~~~~~ of Right. Here Hegel examines the problems of autonomy and community within the typically modern constellation of private interest, in consequence of the liberation of the individual from the const…
