Genre analysis and religious texts
This article proposes a methodological model of genre analysis to apply to Muslim exegesis on the compilations of Prophetic traditions, known as ḥadīth commentary. Inspired by John Swales’s approach to genre analysis, and drawing upon 23 Sunni ḥadīth commentary texts from the tenth century to the present, the model consists of a number of analytical strategies and research questions, as well as specific generic analyses, in four steps: identifyin…

İbn Ḥacer’in Lisānu’l-Mīzān’daki Şīʿī Kaynakları
Bu makalede İbn Ḥacer’in zayıf ravilere dair meşhur eseri Lisānu’l-Mīzān’daki Şīʿī kaynak kullanımı incelenmektedir.

This article analyzes Salafī editors' critical engagement with medieval ḥadīth commentators by focusing on the problem of divine attributes in the ḥadīth commentary l…

Contested Avenues in Post-Classical Sunni Ḥadīth Criticism
This article analyses Sunni ḥadīth criticism by focusing on both its historical development and its reception in contemporary Muslim discourses on the authority of the Prophet’s Sunna. It argues that while ḥadīth criticism was an isnād-oriented elite practice relying on a close study of individual ḥadīths for roughly the first four centuries, new challenges arose to these major characteristics from the fifth/eleventh century onwards, including a …
The Significance of the Successors (al-Tābiʿūn) as Reflected in Early Ḥadīth Collections
In the early generations of Islam, the Successors (al-t bi n) played an important role by making significant contribution to the formation of Islamic sciences such as fiqh, ad th, and tafs r. Thus, it is not surprising to see various references to their opinions in the early examples of different Islamic literary genres. For example, early ad th collections include a great number of traditions attributed to the Successors -which would later be ca…
