Embedded imperatives in Semitic, Germanic, and other languages
Several Semitic and Germanic languages, just as languages belonging to other language families (Slovenian, Korean), embed imperatives and thus use direct speech in syntactical context, where most other languages would use subordinate clauses. This kind of embedding can entail “shifting indexicals” and “imposters”, i.e. the reference to one and the same person with different persons in the verbal and pronominal system, even within one and the same…

On the role of Modern South Arabian within a comparative Semitic lexicographical project
Drawing on material collected in the course of a large comparative Semitic lexicographic project in general and inspired by Kogan 2015 and other sources (mainly the dictionaries by Thomas Muir Johnstone and Wolf Leslau) in particular, this paper aims at detecting specific lexical peculiarities and semantic shades in the South Semitic (mainly Modern South Arabian) lexicon, in order to determine the value of this branch for genetic classification w…
Perspektiven Einer Computergestützten Analyse Der Qur'ānischen Morpho-Syntax Und Satz-Syntax in Kolometrischer Darstellung

Stylistic Elements in the Use of Arabic as Language in Diplomacy
In this paper, a number of stylistic features of contemporary diplomatic Arabic will be investigated. These are the interference of historical and contemporary Arab-Islamic thought and terminology with accepted stylistic standards in international documents as well as certain metaphorical, including euphemistical, elements of style that are germane to Arabic. Subject of the discussion will be bi- and multilateral treaties that are either conclude…
(F) Notes on the Emergence of New Semitic Roots in the Light of Compounding
Independently of the question as to whether bi- or triradical roots have historical preponderance in Semitic, there are clear cases of Semitic verbal and nominal roots that have emerged through a process of compounding or integration of additional elements (verbal or nominal affixes and even prepositions). In this paper, an attempt will be made to establish a hierarchical typology of such processes of morphophonological re-analysis, in both histo…
Principles Behind the New Revised Edition of Brünnow and Fischer's "Arabische Chrestomathie"
This paper examines the editorial principles underlying the eighth revised edition of Rudolf-Ernst Brünnow’s and August Fischer’s Arabische Chrestomathie aus Prosaschriftstellern, as carried out by Lutz Edzard and Amund Bjørsnøs. An essential feature of the added commentary to the text excerpts is the recourse to the methods and terminology in native Arabic grammatical theory. Throughout his career in research and teaching, Michael G. Carter has …
Sībawayhi's Observations on Assimilatory Processes and Re-syllabification in the Light fo Optimality Theory
The last seven chapters (chs. 565–71) of Sībawayhi’s Kitāb contain many phonetic and phonological observations that can be conveniently recast in terms of theories of linguistic preference and natural generative phonology (Hooper 1976), notably in terms of the approach of Vennemann (1983, 1988). Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993) offers a formal means to capture the “constraint ranking” that is implicit in Sībawayhi’s rejection of disa…
